Currently I'm a big fan of Tiny XP (Rev 09) it does everthing I want with no bloat, and has the SATA drivers included to install on my laptop.

I then just layer on the apps I want afterwards, starting with an AV and malware scan just to be sure the OS is sound.

I have tried Vista, to slow on my laptop, and Ubuntu, loved this but it had some graphics issues and the other half kept killing the wireless (not sure how worked flawlessly for me).

So a vote for XP from me, with Tiny being my preference.

well the main diffrence is that you can address more than 4 gig of space 32 bit can only address 4gig by default and that means you can only have about 3 gig of ram and 32 bit windows will only give 2gig of that for applications. 64bit however you can have lots more ram and if you have 4gig then windows can use the whole lot and will let applications use the whole lot this also means that 32bit applications are now use 4gig instead of the 2gig 32bit windows would give. There is also the advantage of higher security in 64 bit and the extra registers that could improve performance with 64bit apps.

course you can... use windows 3.11 for workgroups. it fuckin flies!

on a serious note. yeah you will see a difference. if your processor is the limiting factor for your vista benchmark then your processor rating may go up by 0.3ish...

this was a big thing for my mate. his pc had a quad core, 4gb ddr3 ram, 256mb graphics, sata2 system rated at 5.7. He only got it to 5.9 by upgrading to vista x64 .

if you run apps that can utilise x64 then go for it... just check up before hand...

if you're just a gamer then here's the most current list of x64 games:

    Half-Life 2
    Lost Coast
    Bet On Soldier: Blood Sport
    Codename: Panzers (Phase one)
    Colin McRae Rally 2005
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
    Far Cry
    Fahrenheit
    Shadow Ops: Red Mercury
    Unreal Tournament 2004
    WWII Tank Commander
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
    Dreadnought

    as listed here:

    http://www.start64.com/index.php?opt...190&Itemid=116

i'd still go for x64 though. look to the future, not the current...

The only problems I have with 64bit Vista is with some of the 360 flashing tools, for those I have XP MCE 32bit dual boot. I use Vista home premium 64bit on my PC and Ultimate 64bit on my notebook.

I got a DVD with all 32 and 64 bit versions of vista all pre-registered from newsgroups. Can't see it on there now though.

EDIT: here it is if you have enough NG retenton, newshosting should offer 250 days retention now.

you will find that vista x64 is more compatable and hasmore drivers for it than xp x64. And as for compatability yes you do need x64 drivers and x64 versions of programs that install drivers like anti virus programs. P.S not used the xp x64 for a while so it may be different now but i did notice a lot more programs worked without hassel with vista x64 than xp x64

I have 2 HDDs, both with a separate partition for OS and rest for storage space. Dual boot option at startup.

    Not used XP 64bit myself.

Because it's just someone's idea of how they want a PC. Not always to everyone's taste. I make my own slipstreamed DVDS for home and work using nlite etc'.

Not saying it's rubbish just not everyones cup o java.

Thing with those disks is they always get out of date quickly and the programs on them can be un-registered with updates. Plus all the keygens and shit on there, somewhere there'll be a trojan.

You cannot keep all the people happy all the time. (DJ's motto ;-))

XP64 has been stable as anything for me and I've got a fairly similar system to you.

    Intel E8500
    Asus P5Q Deluxe
    4GB DDR2 RAM
    8800GTS G92

    Doesn't have WGA either
