Attention Open verdict at Menezes inquest

The jury at the inquest into the mistaken shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes has returned an open verdict.

Two officers shot Mr de Menezes seven times as he sat on a train at Stockwell Underground station, south London. They thought he was a suicide bomber.

The jury returned the verdict after deliberating for a week.

The family had earlier withdrawn from the inquest after the coroner said the jury could not return a verdict of unlawful death at the hands of police.

Sir Michael Wright, the coroner at the three-month-long inquest at the Oval Cricket Ground in London, said the facts did not justify allowing the jury to consider an unlawful killing.

Throughout the inquest, Metropolitan Police officers told the hearings they honestly believed the Brazilian was one of the four failed bombers who attempted to strike London on 21 July 2005.

Mr de Menezes' family and supporters challenged this version of events, saying they wanted answers to why surveillance officers could not identify the man they were following - and why two specialist officers shot the electrician at close range.

Sir Michael also asked the jury of 10 to tell him whether or not a series of events on 22 July 2005 contributed to the 27-year-old's death.

A majority of the jury said that they did not believe officers had shouted "armed police" before opening fire.

Turning to Mr de Menezes' actions, they said they believed he had stood up from his seat before being shot - but they did not believe he had moved towards the first officer to open fire.

yep cover up to protect the law, the jury even said they believed the witnesses who stated the police didnt shout "armed police" before opening fire, yet the police said they did. utter bullshit.

how they where not found guilty is beyond me, whether there trying to protect us or not from these suicide jockeys they where wrong and didnt follow protocol which does make them guilty. if they followed the rules that are in place he may well still have been shot but at least they wouldnt need to lie and cover up, they could tell it as it was and not have to worry in court.

Basically the Judge (Sir Michael Wright) prohibited the Jury from returning a verdict of unlawful killing, which left them with no other option than an open verdict (the most critical option available to them). It was basically a protest vote from the jurors.

Robert Mugabe could learn a thing or two from us

Ive no real interest in the case to be honest, Menzes to me was just a guy taking up a seat on a train he should never have been on, in a country he should never been in.

More space on the train i guess.

But at the time the police had no way of knowing he was illegal so he was policed as a valid uk citizen.

Do you think this is the way we should all potentially be treated? If this happened to someone you knew, do you think this would be an acceptable outcome?

Afaik, he was running to try and catch a train. Happens all the time at train stations.

Edit: Even so, we are both debating on info we have from the coppers, and I think their word has been proved to be worthless in this case.

The guy was murdered in cold blood as far as I'm concerned, and ONLY because he had the temerity to be of a similar colouring to someone who could be a muslim. Basically the police totally fucked up, tried to cover it all up, failed, but used their muscle to get a positive result.

Ain't it interesting that its the Londoners on this forum who are most scathing of the police. Perhaps we don't want to be protected by highly armed commandos operating under the usual level of dodgy intelligence. At the end of the day London isn't a war zone so words like ''Collateral Damage'' do not apply.

Diablos, you don't know the meaning of terror my friend..... unless your 9/11 was that kebab van crash at Glasgow Airport

I think that's a little unfair, for every terrorist attack we hear about being stopped there is probably 10 others we don't. You would imagine that Mumbai attackers would probably have preferred to target London/New York or any other heavily populated western city. The fact that they didn't I think speaks volumes.

Don't get me wrong I don't live my life in fear of terrorism or believe it is lurking around every corner, but I do believe that without the work of the security services we'd have probably seen many more successful attacks.

People sound surprised by the outcome of this!!! When have the Government openly criticised another Government department? The verdict was decided well before the case even started. Can't prove it obviously but you can bet your bottom dollar there were secret 'closed door' meetings.

GTI I'm not a Londoner (thank fuck) but I'm very critical of the police. Having worked in a similiar field for 12 years I can assure there is vast corruption within the establishment and a very strong case of the 'old school tie' brigade.

People may laugh and joke here but remember someone very real died here for absolutely no reason. It could have been your brother!
I understand and accept that some people hold opinions that are different to my own. Living in a free and democratic society, I fully embrace and respect their right to be wrong.
