    Tech Satellite broadband launched

A new satellite broadband service could be the saviour of people who find themselves unable to get broadband, or who live in places where the broadband service is not up to much.

BeyondDLS will soon be marketing their product, ASTRAConnect, which is expected to offer an up 2 Mbps service.

This service can be picked up anywhere in the UK, which will be very useful to areas where fixed line broadband is unable to offer a satisfactory service.

The cost is expected to start from around £19.99 per month, which is not bad at all.

However the downside is going to be the cost of the equipment and installation, with figures being pushed around of over £300.

The cost of the equipment could mean that some users will be staying with their current supplier until some better deals are offered to encourage new sign ups.

i had satellite broadband years ago though a company called eon, they promised big speeds but it never worked very well but im guessing the technology has moved on now. expect massive pings though, the signal takes 250ms minimum to make the trip

I had the download only service from Europe online it was great getting files down at 10MB/s 5 times faster than what I get now. The only problem is if you wanted a download you had to schedule it then wait. I did get everything everyone else had requested as well so there was plenty to trawl through and delete.

I also had the europe online, through a pci card I bought which cost £199 at the time, and then had to sign up for the service itself on top... it was shit tbh, I was told you select your downloads (I did this via dial up) then set them to DL via sat software when you want them, pfft, had to 'queue' them and they'd get sent as and when which was usually the next day or so.

If this new idea want to really take off, I think it would have to include initial set-up in monthly price or I can only see people with no other option and want higher speeds taking it until the gear is cheaper on its own.

I was in from the beginning (hence my Location in my profile ) of sat broadband at slightly over 10Mbps and it was great, especially when you used a hacked client called "bitchslapper".

    Unlimited downloads 24/7 for £99 a year .

Sadly it couldnt go on , cos we were using all the bandwith for the *normal users* accross europe and they tightened up their client software and sold out.

    Oh the memories .......

    Sadly missed

Aint that sure tbh mate, I have been "out of the loop" for a couple of years ever since broadband launched in my area. My 1.2m motorised dish has long since been removed (moved house).

Dont get me wrong , it was a fantastic cheap service (but only when setup correctly ) but to get the best out of it you needed a dedicated pc that was fast with plenty of ram and plenty of hard drive space (at one stage I had a total of 5TB of hard drives stuffed with *stuff* just stacked up in the corner of the room, not in pc's just stacked for my archives lol)

You also needed to keep an eye on it as the odd error or 2 in the Twofish decryption algorithm as the files were coming in would tend to start backing the downloads up and render the pc *unstable* lol.

You also had to be trustworthy, as you had to hand over your account details (login / pass) so that all us users could have our allowances grouped together for us *members* to share and the files to be *pushed* from 0-sec ftp's.

The beauty of it was that files were just sent once and therefore multicasted to hundreds of users at the same time.

But as I say, things have moved on now (me included) and I prefer to d/l *exactly* what I want , when I want rather than be swamped with more *stuff* than you can shake a stick at.

I moved into the sat d/l world just after Redhotant went bust (thats another story lol , 128kbps 24/7 for £60 a year ... no wonder they went bust )
