    Default Any gamers tested Windows 7 yet?

    I'm thinking about getting Windows 7 but I just need to be on the sure side that I won't run into any problems.

    I mostly use Steam and WoW and I know Windows 7 is based on the same kernel as Vista so I should be fine but I just need some reassuring so have you had any problems with drivers or games booting up since getting Windows 7?

    Windows 7 comes with DX11. This does create issues when playing games as the games do not recognise it correctly. You need to install DX10 (or part of it) for the full benefit for some reason. It is still DX11, but has some features missing I believe.

    Got Need for Speed: Undercover, Crysis, Red Alert 3 and Fifa 09 all running a treat.

    I play most of my games in DX9 because of the AA problems related to DX10 so is there any way of playing in DX9 mode on Windows 7?

    Hmm try running them in DX9 mode on Vista(if your still using it).

    DX10 is quite taxing when you apply anti-aliasing.

    I played Warcraft III fine on it the other day but I have a direct x 9 gfx card.

    It did make a weird noise every time I alt tabbed tho.

    I installed some new gfx drivers and this lead me to have graphics card failures. Then I re-installed the ones that came with windows 7 and I was having graphics corruption all over the place with crysis and cod4. Gone back to vista x64 and all is fine. Do not make the same mistake I did and assume you can use the vista x64 drivers. Also you won't get the speed benefit of the 181 drivers since windows 7 is only 179 if i'm right.

    Is it worth getting the 64 bit versions these days? since I have just realised that I would be able to run it now when previously I couldn't.

    I was under the impression that there were still very few apps that use the 64bit so its kinda pointless?

    Well crysis has a 64 bit exe and steam actually installs a 64 bit version of counter strike. All your windows drivers and system files are all being executed with 64 bit instructions. Guess all this must make a difference under the hood. I was quite surprised to see a 32bit version of windows 7 at all. I don't have any problems at all under vista x64 with drivers or anything else for that matter. I think originally it was that there was a lack of drivers but because its been out for quite a while now all that has passed. You have to remember it takes time for the transition between 32 and 64.

    This is ripped from a source on the net:

    Let’s look at the average PassMark rating for the four different platforms:

    * Vista 32-bit RTM
    PassMark rating: 1002.4

    * Vista 32-bit SP1
    PassMark rating: 972.3

    * Vista 64-bit RTM
    PassMark rating: 1183.1

    * Vista 64-bit SP1
    PassMark rating: 1128.8

    * Vista 32-bit RTM
    Boot up time: 27 sec

    * Vista 32-bit SP1
    Boot up time: 31 sec

    * Vista 64-bit RTM
    Boot up time: 44 sec

    * Vista 64-bit SP1
    Boot up time: 42 sec

    Ooo 64 bit cs might be quite cool. Dam I should have got that version, I wasn't even thinking about it at the time.
    Slightly longer boot times tho wonder why that is...

    I have Left4Dead and WAR running fine. Using stock driver for a GTX 7950 from Win7. Haven't tried the latest Vista drivers. Performance seems no worse from XP. Only issues was a missinng dll, easily fixed, and the usual having to run a few things as admin. Xfire and TeamSpeak 2 aslo running fine, related to games.

    I'd be interested to hear how the valve games run in Win7, mainly L4D and TF2.

    They're pretty much all I play, if I knew they ran well I'd install it.

    Whoops, just seen the post above.
