there is a load of media sharing options built in to win 7, i set it all up and then couldnt work out why my movies didnt appear on my ps3, I then fired up windows media player (which seems heavily intergrated into w7) and added files to it's library. Everything then appeared in the ps3 menus (as a media server) I should imagine it will work largely the same on the old xbox.

For standard shares, the first thing I would do is disable the firewall but i cant see why they wouldnt just work tbh with the same settings

You need to change the network setting to say password protected off and make sure everything else is turned on.
Then on each of the folders you want shared make sure they say share with everyone.
Also you might want to not have the files stored in user folders since they can have specific permissions to not let anyone view them who is not you.

I don't think the media player integration works for the old xbox only the 360.

right ive done everything you said, now ive also turned off the local windows firewall, and the xbox sees my pc in smb shares. However it still askes for a user name and password and i cant work out how to turn this off, is it a windows thing on my pc or an option im missing in xbmc?

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

In there turn off password protected sharing.

I have set my PC up as dual boot now XP is fine again, I will have a fiddle with 7 tomorrow.

yep already done that nibb, rechecked it, all ok, still askes for a password, doing my head in now, only want to be able to watch my films lol. as i say its really annoying in the fact the xbox sees my pc, as it didnt before but just wants a user and password for my pc smb shares.
thought i would add, all rss feeds are working on the xbox, as is ftp transfer, so im at a loss now

Does it work when you add the user and pass?

nope, just keeps cycling between username and password, i checked in windows sercurity i was typing the right pass word, so unless ive got the user name wrong, im not sure, its got to be either workgroup or homegroup, but doesnt work with either. Very odd

If its asking for user name/ pass it needs the name and pass you log into your pc with not the workgroup name.

    Try that.

Did you turn the password off on both home and public networks? Not that that would make a difference but worth a shot?

The key is if you can access the files from a normal windows network then you can get them on your xbox. Might be easier to test it that way and then get working with your xbox.

right had another play around with this, got shares working on the 360 altho it doesnt see all my films, im guessing thats because it doesnt support all codecs.
but i still cant get my old xbox with xbmc on it to stream from my pc with out asking for a password or user name
