Help Windows 7 broke my ethernet ports

It might well be a coincidence but it appears that windows 7 has broken both my Ethernet ports.

I installed it on Saturday and everything was working fine and up and running, didn't have to install anything just ran windows update a few time and everything was working perfectly including media sharing over the network and internet, etc.

The network detect settings showed all the computers connected to the network and the netgear router it was attached to.

Booted the machine on Sunday and couldn't then I could no longer connect to the router.
    (i.e. 192.168.0.1 doesn't work)

Tried running all the fixes I could think of and the thing still says couldn't get a valid ip address or similar.

Installed a wireless card and can connect to the router fine and my xbox connects through a wire to the router and can still get on xbox live, so that is working.

I then reinstalled windows 7 to see if that fixed it but no joy.
I reinstalled windows xp and that had the same problem.

The drivers are installed and working and it looks like the network cards are trying to do something but just cannot connect.

Is there anything else I can do to try and fix this or do they look to be broken randomly?

The only other thing I could try is I think I have a pci Ethernet port somewhere that I could install to see if that works. Otherwise im out of ideas other than sending the motherboard back for replacement.

    Thanks

Try setting static IP details, could be your router's DHCP playing up.

I have set the router to statically set the ip to 192.168.0.4 which always worked before since I have a few services forwarded to that ip.

I might try changing it tho, or try setting that for the mac address for the other Ethernet port.

    Good idea.

Have you tripped over the cable and pulled it out.

Na, I tried using a different cable as well.

The light is on at both ends of the cable when plugged in as well.
Tried changing the port on the router as well.

    Stupid thing.

Run command and see what your ip address is on this machine.
Check that the networks are in the same range as 192.168.0.1 looks very like 192.168.1.1 and dhcp enabled should be giving the right address.

All my other networks are assigned static ips so they are on 192.168.0.2 and .0.3 and .0.5 for my xbox.

My pc currently doesn't have an assigned ip so it starts with something like 83.217.124.34 which is what they sometimes say if they have no connection or are connected directly to the internet via dialup...

This pc should be assigned with 1092.168.0.4 but maybe I should turn that feature off on the router in case it wants to have itself a different ip.

Personally I think the ports are broken but need to give it one last try tonight before sending it back.

your using static ips ,and dhcp seems to be on.What happens when you go to the adapter setting and give it a static one.

Haha, just like in the olden days when I used to have to turn my windows 98 machine off for a while to let it cool down and rest.
