Burundi senate rejects gay bill

Homosexuality is banned in many African countries

Burundi's senate has rejected a draft law that criminalises homosexuality.
The draft proposed a sentence of three months to two years in prison for homosexual conduct.
It was approved by the lower chamber of parliament, the national assembly, last year - provoking criticism from human rights groups. US-based Human Rights Watch has warned that the country would be in breach of international human rights treaties if the legislation is passed. The draft, amended by the senate, will now go back to the lower chamber.
