Photos Jumping Spider (or Zebra Spider)

One I never got around to originally.

This jumping spider was stood on a knitted cardigan.

I didn't use it cos of the light issues... these beasties are probably less than ½ centimetre long maybe...

"Salticus scenicus" is the latin name. I think most of us would also know it as the "Zebra" spider.

    Opinions as always appreciated.

    Exif:

    Camera Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS 400D DIGITAL
    Focal Length: 105.0mm
    CCD Width: 4.58mm
    Exposure Time: 0.600 s
    Aperture: f/8.0
    ISO equiv: 100
    White Balance: Auto
    Metering Mode: Matrix
    Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)

The front of the spider is amazing as you picked up all the hairs. Only comment and this is from a person who doesn't take pictures is the picture looses a little focus on the rear of the spider. All in all a great little shot.

Its better to burn out than to fade away...............

Did you have it drugged Paul, these little buggers jump when you get anywhere them. I used to have them run round my desk at work quite a bit but Never noticed how hairy they were until now!

A very narrow DOF, as has been pointed out, but the texture of the cardigan adds something too.

I'm liking this one, don't know why though as I'm not a spider liking person normally!
What is it with steel wool? Is it steel? Or is it wool?

    It just stayed there.

Caution and stealth are the watchwords for spiders...

Very good shot once again Paul. As always you produce excellent shots of these little critters and I'm yet to actually find one!

Hangman, the reason for the "out of focus" area is down to the extremely narrow Depth of Field in Macro shots. That is, the area in focus.

In order for Paul to have got the entire spider in focus, he would have had to pull back further from the spider, increasing the DoF and ultimately a smaller image with less fine detail.
Another way would have been to use focus stacking. Tough because you have to rely on your subject staying in the same place. Hope this clears that up for you a bit . Quite often, Macro will be of a specific area on the subject as opposed to the whole subject.

But you're right, it IS a great shot

that has got to be one of your best, the cardigan makes a great foreground, if i had to say something it would be your signature very distracting and a 2 minute job to clone out if you want the pic, back to the shot spot on mate...

I'd go for a sig with 50% opacity / watermark.
The current sig does draw your eye from the subject.
Also, having your sig in the top left... it will get blanked out with the grey 'Save|Print|Email|My Pics' box in IE

I usually reduce the opacity, I kind of forget sometimes. Will do it if I can think on.. :

IE? You still use IE? And saving my uploads will not be much use for most as I add them small for forum use so they pixelate at larger sizes... lol..

I dont use IE as a rule, but the majority of the PC user Public will.
(from doing cross platform web design, you never put information in top left img.) You have to consider all users, especially if you make a living from your images online.
