    Shearer to become Newcastle boss

Shearer spent a decade at Newcastle before retiring in 2006

BBC Sport understands that Alan Shearer will be appointed as Newcastle manager until the end of the season.

Magpies legend Shearer, 38, has been continually linked with a return to the club but has been critical of the current structure at St James' Park.

Chris Hughton is currently in caretaker charge of the club as interim manager Joe Kinnear recovers from a triple heart bypass.

The Magpies are currently 18th in the table with 29 points from 30 matches.
Shearer scored 206 goals in 404 appearances during a 10-year playing stint to earn legendary status on Tyneside after joining for a record £15m fee from Blackburn.

The former England striker, who retired from playing in 2006, has made no secret of his desire to become a manager one day.

However, Shearer, who is currently a pundit on BBC TV's Match of the Day, was believed to be put off from returning to St James' Park by the regime of owner Mike Ashley - which he described as "strange" in March.

In September 2008 he rejected an offer to join the coaching staff at St James' Park.
Both on and off the pitch, Newcastle have lurched from one crisis to the next this season following the departure of Kevin Keegan early in the campaign.

Following a fans' backlash over Keegan's exit, Ashley raised the possibility of selling the club, before deciding to stay on.
Key striker Michael Owen has been involved in just four games this year due to an ankle injury, while Charles N'Zogbia moved to Wigan in the January transfer window after a high-profile bust-up out with Kinnear.

Hughton also denied Ashley had come to dressing room after the game to speak to the players.

Showing up as breaking news on Sky and they will unveil it tomorrow officially.

Not sure in my head it's a good move yet. Great for confidence and something for the fans to talk about. I really hope he makes a success of the last 8 games of this season for himself, for the club and for me as a fan. Another trip on the toon rollercoaster!!

My first reaction to this was WTF has he done that for, especially now after all the previous speculation about him moving to the job when they were in a better position than they are now.

But thinking about it, what has he got to lose?
The fans idolise him, press love him and worst case scenario they get relegated - which won't be his fault - win/win

If he can keep them up then I think it'll be the perfect start for him to be allowed to make his own way tactically and personnel-wise, and have his position at a club with the fans and boardroom already feeling indebted to him. - in the biggest best league in the world!

Newcastle aren`t a small club either, this will stir both player and fans, and if he does as well as I hope he does (I do really like Shearer as a player and a bloke) then within a few years he could be challenging regularly for the CL, along with Villa (who have O'Neill) and Spurs (Redknapp, who I also love)...making the top 4 more of a Top 7 ..

As long as Man Utd finish 1st each year I don't care

PS. How long before "Shearer for England"

Maybe the reason the press conference is scheduled for Thursday?? That was the first thought at NUFC.com as well, but for BBC, Sky, the times, the telegraph etc to cover the same story, it's either a great Aprils Fool coup for everyone or infact it aint no AF and good news for the club

A txt and a reputable article on BBC News Sport is slightly different IMO!

we desperately need a bit of a confidence boost, and hopefully this will do it. As rikman said, he's got nothing to lose, we're headed for relegation anyway, so i just hope and pray he can do it. just a shame the next game is chelski

This proves what a massive club Newcastle are.......... NOT!!! What a joke!! Suppose you gotta start somewhere, and as they say start at the bottom (nearly in this case).
