Newbie Couple of questions before buying TomTom

I've had a read through all the stickies and I think I've got my head round most of it, but just wanted a bit of positive feedback before I take the plunge and buy one of these bad boys.

I've used tomtom for sometime on my n95 and I know its fairly easy to aquire the maps and put them on the phone with the right tools, is the same true of the stand alone units, and if so is it true of all of them?

I'm probably looking to get just a nice basic TomTom One off ebay and then stick a bigger card in with some USA maps off newzbin. Is it really that simple or is there more 'hacking' to be done than that?

Is there any models I should aviod if i want to stick extra maps on there?

    YES it's really that simple,

Just be careful which model TT One you buy - only the early ones (v1 or v2 had the slot for the memory cards) v3 onwards have no slot and fixed internal memory of either 512Mb or 1024 Mb. It is possible to modify some of the later ones and solder in a sdhc adaptor then use any size sdhc card you want (I've done my own TT One v3 UK model this way) but it's a bit of extra hassle when it is probably easier to make sure you buy the right one in the first place.

    Good Luck

Yep I agree with what Northernbloke said. The tools & files you need are all here -
    http://digital-forums.com/showthread.php?t=440416
The safest option when upgrading is to get the latest original software & then patch it & add new maps as you may have an odd problem using patched version of Navcore.

Keep us updated mate. I'm currently using tomtom on my Nokia n95 but the maps are out of date now so think it's time to buy a dedicated GPS unit. Don't want to spend too much though since it will only be used a few times.

Ideally I want to be able to put the latest European maps and possibly US maps on the unit

Have seen the Navigo unit from ebuyer for sub 50 quid but am I right in presuming you cannot install the latest version of tomtom and the latest maps on this device?

You should be able to use Tomtom v7 with the v825.2159 maps on the Navigo
Tomtom V7 for WCE 5.0 (PDA / Navigo etc)
There might be a slightly newer version ?? but I know this copy has been used on a Navigo 1 & Navigo 3.5" V2 (& ipaq rx5935)

v7 is the latest version that will work on WinCE units, v8 only works on the genuine Tomtom units.
Main differences are that on v8 you have :- IQ routes, ALG (lane guidance), ASR (speech recognition - this does not work on the older Tomtom units) & LoquendoTTS (computer voices), but none of these on v7. The map detail on the v825.2157 & 825.2159 maps is the same, but v825.2157 maps will not work on TT v7.

Yeah - Does v7 have the 'live' traffic features? i.e. will it tell you to go a different way once the rush hour comes etc I know the new TomTom's have this feature...but this may link up with other TomToms, so not sure

I was thinking of IQ Routes.....and am guessing this won't run on Navigo units?

Thanks again for that mate! I would like the lane guidance so it looks like I will have to go for a genuine unit - possibly a 5XX series although I will keep my eyes open for a cheapy tomtom one vI or vII although it all depends on price I guess since the Navigo is really tempting being around 50 quid brand new.

Best choice would be a 520 or 530, they are slimmer units & have more ram.

Info Re: Couple of questions before buying TomTom

I have just got myself a TomTom 720 and wondered if you knew of this place: http://***.satnav-discounts.co.uk/to...om-refurbs.htm

I got a refurbished unit from their link for a fair price.

That's not a bad idea actually. Guess you could just buy a refurb 720 for £150, then update it so it would be like a 730?

That is exactly what I am doing as it comes with a latest map guarantee.

Now then, I've bought a tomtom one v2 off ebay for £39 (without a card) and then bought a 4gb sd card for a fiver.

Do I just need the Map on the card or does the OS need to be loaded onto the card too?

I know I'm asking newbie questions but you know whats its like trying to crack into a new field everything seems complex till ya get into it.
