Question Dumped virgin got BE and need email

Well almost, my BE goes live tommorow and the letter to cancel Virgin will also go out tommorow.

Anyway just looking to get an email address from Be and noticed they are charging £2 a month for the pleasure along with 1Gb web space. Although it aint much I begrudge paying for summit that is so openly free. I already have a Gmail account but dont trust it to be as 'private' as it should and dont trust it for the likes of bank, paypal etc. Aslo some sites and forums do not accept gmail as an email addy.
Is there another reputible email provider that people trust?
    Which ones do you use?

P.S. Dont need the 'webspace' as long as Im able so send/receive files pics etc through the mail.

I just uesd a pay-as-you-go dial up account e-mail address (actually it was a virgin address). As long as you keep using it it should stay live and costs nothing.

s of changing over from plusnet to $ky for BB and plusnet will leave me with a dial up account for free as long as I access it monthly. Will virgin not do the same?

Didnt think Virgin would do the same. Will find out soon I suppose. I did that a while ago with IC24, kept it as pay as you go dial up account then after a few months they said I had to use the account through there dial up number or it would get deleted. So bombed them out.
Ive signed up to http://gmx.co.uk (nice short addy lol) see how that goes for now.

I use Gmail and I've even got my business email running through gmail as they can manage your own domain's email for free (1 user). The Spam filtering is very good too.

i don't know about the pay as you go option but as i didn't cancel my old virgin boardband but about 3 months after it was cancelled my email address stopped working.

Its probably best to check with virgin on there pay as you go option.

Just a note for ka$h i used to work for plusnet your email will stay open for around 90 days without you accessing when i left all they ddi was run a script every so often to find pay as you go account with email accounts not accessed in the last 90 days.

Just an update to this. Have cancelled Virgin today and was told all services will be lost including any email addresses I had.
Im getting 16Mb connection speed from Be for £17.50 as opposed to 18Mb from Virgin for £35, so Im a bit happier atm.

@Pegasus, a few things if you have time. Assuming Im a complete noob how would I go about setting up my own mail server? does that mean my computer has to be on all the time?
Also I think I read a post somewhere that you also have Be broadband, you then tweaked it for more speed as I recall. I cant find that post (searching be and broadband gets too many results). Do you have any tips or a link to that post if im right. Cheers

How far are you from the exchange? I have been thinking of going from Virmin to BE but according to one site I am 900 odd meters from the exchange and should get a paltry 4.5mb (currently on 10mb as downgraded from 20mb to save a few quid) yet according to BE's speed checker thing they reckon I could get 14.5mb. I couldn't live with 4.5mb, this is the only thing putting me off switching.

Im 1.4km (straight line) from the exchange. Im getting a solid 18Mb speed now. Downloaded 8 gig in less than an hour yesterday.

Only problem I have now is I cant send any emails. Raised a ticket with be to see what the problem is but got nowt back yet. Think it has summit to do with a dynamic IP and the router has blocked port 25 (or so Ive interpreted it from the forum).

Are you sure you are not still using virgins smtp server as they will not allow connections from non virgin lines.

Yes Im sure. Got a reply from Be and it is because I have a dynamic IP and port 25 is blocked. I can transfer to a static IP to solve the problem but it would have been nice if they told me beforehand to save the hassle.

Just a heads up for those on Be. I just asked for a MAC code and they offered me Be Unlimited for £12/month + 1 free month. I've accepted their very kind offer, saves me £5 a month.
