Help which laptop/netbook/notebook for up to £300(ish)

as title, i am looking to buy a cheapo basic laptop for my old dear.

basically, i just need it to send/receive emails, a bit of ebay and general looking round the internet, nothing too processor-heavy. i have a couple of asus eeepc 901's in my house which me and the kids use, they are a bit slow and the processor/memory sometimes even struggles to keep up with the broadband connection, when even just looking at some websites. i also think the screen/keyboard may be a bit little for her. any suggestions or offers anywhere anyone knows of??

    thanks in advance

Try PC world's refurbs just bought one from there myself, don't forget quidco and check MSE to see if there's any current discount codes.

they are the acer aspire one's is pretty good but if its going to be the main machine i'd look towards a laptop rather than a "netbook" they are laptops too but the keyboard is smaller and harder to type on and the screen is very small in comparison, if she's going to be surfing/ emailing on only this machine and its not going out of the house i'd get something about a 15" screen with not much battery life and run it plugged in (saying that you'd get 1.5-2hrs on the battery)

thanks chaps. the samsung only has the same processor as my eeepc so i am thinking that might be a little slow still. refurbs are a no-go, my mam would never let me live it down, she would rather have a brand new £150 netbook rather than a wek old £1500 sony vaio!!! so, in view of the info you guys have provided....

can anyone recommend me a laptop with 15' screen for a reasonable price?

    cheers chaps

have a look at www.laptopsdirect.co.uk they have plenty, non of them seem to have more than 2gb's of ram though so if you want more you'd have to install it yourself

other than that id have a look at dell's business section they have some pretty decent spec machines for not a lot, and they generally have better batterys or at least the option to go for a bigger battery

pc world also have some under £300 but theyre (other than the advent and packard bell) all no name brands which i dont know if you'd be bothered by

Sourced a cheapo laptop for someone at work today - HP 550 CEL 550 160GB 2GB 15.4IN DVD±RW VB £335.00 with xp pro. Can't say if it's actually worth getting, but it's cheap, it's new, and it looks like it has a screen and keyboard.
