    Default Any skaters in?

At the risk of being mocked, are there any other skaters on DF?
As a teen I used to be a really keen skater (Quad), and I also played street hockey a lot. As I got older it tailed off and the local rink also closed down and became an indoor karting centre.
Anyway, fast forward 20 years and the karting place have allowed the former rink owners to do a reunion and take up all the tyre walls and track for an 80's skate night. All my skater mates are going and cajoled me into going too. I've rescued my skates from my brother (who stole them from me when he left home) and been having a few practice sessions to make sure I don't kill myself, and I'd forgotten what great fun it is.

They are Bauer Turbo's with wide axles and Belair Hockey wheels.

Is there anyone on here that used to skate or still does?

Used to back in the day, late 80's early 90's, also on a Bauer quads, played Street Hockey for the Bristol Centaurs before the team was disbanded due to some issues.

Used to love the Saturday night roller disco, just in case anyone else form the area and era is in, it was at the Horfield Sports Centre, in Bristol.

I used to do alot of aggressive skating when I was a kid (Jesus about 14 years ago!) - had 8 pairs (because of feet growing) of blades both Oxygens and Roces, but have to admit I preferred my Roces skates. I remember waxing wall edges so you could grind them better! Used to play street hockey too - had quite a good league going at one point, think last time I skated was about age 15 when I had finally grown out of my skates and couldn't be arsed to replace them.

Tried but failed, I have little enough co-ordination as it is without putting myself on 8 tiny wheels.

You'll have to post some pics from the Roller Disco...

Actually I don't. My skating was done in the 80's at Wigan Roller Rink.

I used to be a skater, still am. Played ice hockey since i was 6 and i'm 27 now. Also played roller hockey from when i was 13. We used to have a rink called the Tynemouth Plaza - Roller RInk, someone decided to burn it down for some reason, was a place that was, it was grand in victorian architecture.

Roller Hockey i played for Tynemouth, Ice Hockey played for Whitley - Now i play for Newcastle.

Love your conversion of the Bauer Turbo's. I used to have a pair of Max tours.

Last year I had the fabulous idea of rollerblading to work. It's about 2 miles. I managed 300 yards, fell over in a supreme comedy style and broke my elbow (took my full weight on my left hand and the shock went straight up and broke the corner of my radius).

6 months of no golf and so far, limitless piss-taking from all and sundry.

    Oooh the irony...

    Funny story...not

I was asked to photograph a friend's daughters birthday party a few weeks ago. They'd hired out a skating arena all to themselves. 80's fancy dress theme with food for the kids.

So me, the wife & kids went along and I took the cameras. Everyone skating and I was shooting. Near the end the kids and parents were mithering me to have a go and I thought 'how hard can it be?'. Turns out, very fuckin' hard. Ended up breaking 2 x fingers on my left hand

Note to self: Someone my size should NOT roller skate.

    Never again....

Yeah, I remember the half pipe being built. Here it is in use.
YouTube - "The Empire Skate Building" 1989 Wigan Comp. Part2

In the fourth and fifth year of high school instead of 'regular' PE we had various options, one of which was going here on a Monday afternoon. Fucking brilliant!

I lived in my Bauers for about 2 years from when I was 11 to 13. I used to go everywhere on them. We used to skate around Fairfield Halls (Croydon) and up at South Bank too.

I had 33 Turbos with Sims Street Snakes with German precision bearings. I favoured a back-stop on one boot.

Was actually out on my boots in October 1986 when the hurricane struck (it may hae been the less severe one the floowing year actually). Me and my mates literally got propelled along the Wellesley Road...it was great.

Went to a few roller discos (Donyngs at Redhill) but much preferred terrorising the streets and being outdoors on them.

Tried in-line skates a few years on and hated them.

Yeah, I could never get on with inlines either. Feels like I'm standing on a razor blade!
