Photos Old Folks Home: Testing the 18-55 IS Lens

There is an old folks home just around the way from I live, and the Mrs, daughter and I went for a walk out tonight just for some fresh air, and we passed it on the way back. It was getting on for half past nine and I decided it would make a good test of the KIT lens that came with the 450D.

So I took 2 images and made them into a panorama to fit the whole of the front of the house and pond into the photo. I just lifted the foreground a bit in LR, but other than that there has been no editing or sharpening of the image whatsoever.

So now you can see how good (or bad) the kit lens actually is.

    Tripod mounted.

C&C as always, more of the quality of the lens than the image subject, but that too if you want

    Exif:

    Camera Make: Canon
    Camera Model: Canon EOS 450D
    Image Date: 2009:05:30 21:45:19
    Flash Used: No
    Focal Length: 35.0mm
    CCD Width: 34.80mm
    Exposure Time: 1.000 s
    Aperture: f/13.0
    ISO equiv: 200
    Exposure Bias: -0.33
    White Balance: Manual
    Metering Mode: Matrix
    Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)
    Exposure Mode: Auto Bracketing

    Rather sharp image Paul.

Isn't it normal to disable IS when on a tripod and especially during longer exposures?

Im really pleased with the kit lens, and a friend who has a 400d was blown away when he compared it to his kit lens. It's really come on since the last time (400 -> 450).

That portrait of my daughter I posted was taken using the kit lens btw.

Kit lenses have come on but are still relatively weak, addition of 4 stop IS is nice but most reckon it only really does the job to 3 stops. It apparently has quite bad barrel distortion at the wide end though I have never played with one so wouldn't know. Looking at this pic the verticals look a little out towards the edges???

You can always get good results from a kit lens, I quite often use my kit lens on my D100 and have been more than happy with the results. Unfortunatley you didn't pick a particularly interesting scene to test it on though

Must admit, the vast majority of my shots are taken using my 18-55 non-IS kit lens. In certain conditions it's not at all good but for landscapes it can produce some nice images.

I agree, it was my only lens for a couple of years and I got some reasonable results when all folk do is slag it and that was the non IS one.

the full package got some rave reviews especially the lens, i only have a kit lens 18 55 noimage stabilisation or anything it seems to do a reasonable job, after a new one soon hopeefully, must agree though paul a better subject or location would have been better, still a nice crisp shot though
