I don't mean to sound flippant, but if you now have an extra day off work a week could you not use it as an opportunity to make a little money on the side? As a student I made a packet buying and selling laptops and cars and it was principally because I had plenty of time on my hands and was thus able to drive up and down the country picking up the best deals... (and all that before the days of Ebay).

No, you don't sound flippant at all, I just needed to have an outburst, and air my original feelings at the news.
I do already do a few private jobs here and there. I do flood risk assessments as a requirement of PPS25 for people who need to jump through that hoop for planning. Also prepare plans and for extensions and the like. Do structural calcs for beams and foundations etc, diagnose drainage problems, detailed SUDS designs and storm water modelling, tho that work has been thinner on the ground in this current climate, and not really abundent enough to fall back on
I'm sure we'll cope, obviously it would've been better if my employment was full time.

If you can't find any extra work my advice is don't panic as you'll get used to the lower income. I've been on 4 days since November & it's given me plenty of opportunity to do those jobs round the house that were in a queue for ages. On top of that there's been plenty of cricket on the telly One difference is that for me things were tight at first but then the mortgage dropped a fair bit , but I think they've bottomed out now so you're unlikely to benefit from a similar windfall.
