BT to roll-out faster broadband


Broadband speeds are getting faster for some

BT Broadband is boosting the speeds of millions of its customers to up to 20 megabits per second at no extra cost. The rollout is part of the firm's planned upgrade of lines to so-called ADSL2+ technology.
The firm said the rollout would start with 40% of the UK this summer and reach 55% of customers by March 2010.
Existing customers will have to sign a new 12-month contract to get the boost, while throttling of video streams in peak hours for some customers remains.
Earlier this week BT was criticised when it was revealed it cut the speed of customers on its cheapest broadband package to below 1Mbps in peak hours when using services like the iPlayer and YouTube.
That so-called traffic management will remain in place with the new speeds.
Download caps for the cheapest two packages, of 10 gigabytes and 20 gigabytes, will also continue, the firm said.
In a statement, Gavin Patterson, chief executive officer, BT Retail, said: "Unlike other providers, BT is upgrading customers to 20Mb/s for free. High-speed broadband provides a faster and more reliable service that will transform the way we live, work, learn and play."
BT said it was starting trials of its fibre optic 40Mbps service in Whitchurch, South Wales and Muswell Hill, London this summer, with the aim of offering these speeds to 40% of the country in the future.
The speed boost to 20Mbps is less than the firm's originally stated aims of offering up to 24Mbps.
On its website, BT says in tests "we've found that only a tiny number of customers can actually get 24Mb".

Every ISP has their good and bad points, BT are no worse than any of the others...

BT are utter shite, ive just switched from BT to sky, my download speed was throttled 24/7 to under 1 meg, when i phoned to ask why it was because i had exceeded the downloaded quota for the month (on option 3, unlimited *rolls eyes*)

I was only getting around 3.5mb at best and the woman on the phone tried to tell me id downloaded nearly 2tb in that month, at 3.5mb is that even possible? i dont think so considering you only get 18 hours of downloading each day that isnt throttled

right im gonna go agaisnt all of you here, how i dont have anything to compare it to as ive only ever had BT, I live out in the sticks now, when i lived in town i got 7.5 meg down, now i olny get 2.5 BUT no other isp can better that. i also cant remeber the last time it dropped out, i NEVER get capped, if the hub is set up right, i still host online 360 games anyway.
So for me BT has been ok, but like i said ive not used another isp, but to be frank, i dont think i would

I had BT for 18 months before SKY and the constant throttling was ridiculous, even on NG's i could get 700k but with BT it was often 100K or less which was just frustrating. Now getting 1700K constant with sky and it's £15.00 per month less!

BT are f**king shite. At work they are still billing us 2YEARS after we've had circuits ceased. We've tried to stop paying but they threaten to cut off our live circuits if we don't.

So far they've had to pay back over £6,000 is wrongful charges.

Their "unlimited" service costs my friend over £40 a month in total for everything, (phone + calls).

Sky truly unlimited costs £20 for the same thing... except it's already on ADSL2 and twice as fast...

I just wish they would upgrade the exchanges of all the customers who can only get approx 2 Mb download speeds, before bragging about higher speed lines that are capped and restricted unless you pay top whack

It's not BT's fault that people living far away from an Exchange get bad speed. The longer the length of the wire to the exchange the higher the resistance on the copper wire and the less powerful the signal by the time it reaches your house.

BT scrap the ADSL2+ rollout and concentrate all fire power on the fibre optic roll out. That doesn't suffer the same flaw. You'll get the same service if you live in the centre of London as you would the Scottish highlands...

It is within their capabilities to charge accordingly though. Just a few more pricing tiers. I'm not talking about the whole open buffet fat cunt eats more than skinny cunt debate just flexible pricing dependant on location.

£23 for 2mb is probably subsidising some greedy cunt near an exchange.

I'm now with O2 Broadband and get about 6mb for £7.34 a month, so can't grumble.

I see what you mean but why should someone living further away from the exchange get charged less than someone living close? It's not cheaper for BT to connect people who are further away as they are still using the same hardware. It will only put up prices for people living closer to the exchange and I don't see why I should subsidise people living out in the sticks...

It would probably be fairer if everyone was charged per GB. I'd really hate to see that happen though...
