Newbie Advice on buying an iPhone

Fancied an iPhone for a while but have not really used one much but I`ve decided to just go ahead and get one seeing as I have a few mobiles to sell on fleabay which should cover the cost of an iphone (selling a brand new n96,n95 and an omnia!)
Ok so heres my questions - Im not fussed if the phone I buy is second hand and so is there a big difference between the 3g and 2g iphones? can the 3 g run lots more apps? I will be using 3 as my service provider so the phone will have to be unlocked is this easy to do or are there certain versions which cant be done yet?

I hope some of u can help me out with those questions mainly the 2g 3g differences (im not interested in sat nav either as already got stand alone)

I've just done the very same, and thanks to the excellent support of a couple of guys here I have landed myself what appears to be a nice phone. I paid £335 for a 16GB that is already unlocked.

I'm no expert but I'll try to point out a couple of things I know.

You can't really buy new anymore as there isn't a software unlock for the latest versions of software. You can get dummy sim adaptors but I'm not sure how reliable these are, there seems to be mixed feeling.

So v2.2 software is the latest that can be SW unlocked using yellowsnow. You'll then want to jailbreak it as well.

    This is a good start - http://www.iphonehacks.com/

There are reports of issues with the latest (8.2) version of Itunes so perhaps seek out an older version. Don't allow it to update and don't allow it to update your iPhone.
    Stu.... :-)

All the above but the best place (not the easiest to use) is hackint0sh.org it's where the dev team live and the first place I looked in August 2007 when I unlocked my 2G phone. It's a shame you need 3 because actually the O2 deals are OK and you would only really need to jailbreak. Having said all that mine is on Orange but once that contract ends who knows?
    If at first you don't succeed.....redefine success. . . .
