    Default Kid safe browsing

Just about to move house and setup a little gaming room for my 7 year old, now I would like to put a pc in there just a little concerned about how block the sort of stuff I would look at!!

Was thinking of using http://www.opendns.com/ and blocking most stuff but has anyone seen anything a bit more robust that doesn't cost the earth?? trouble is i don't mind him using youtube etc cos he like watching crocodile videos and stuff but can i get software that can make sure thats all he can see on there???

    Any info welcome guys

I've found this kind of subject very complicated, there's a few packages designed to ristrict certain sites but you'll probably end up spending weeks/months configuring it properly after it blocks something you may not have wanted blocked etc etc..

i don't think there is anything which will block certain video clips either, I wouldn't see how that would work as people can and do disguise their videos on the net. trust, supervision and basic monitoring (ie viewing history) are the best tools imo.

There's a free filtering product that I've used for kids before and seems to do the job fine.

    K9 Web Protection

I don't know of any software that will filter You Tube down to the level you require unfortunately.

yea thats what worries me, what i might do is just allow certain sites upstairs jetix bbc etc then when he wants youtube and stuff he can come downstairs where we will be, its a right pain in the arse when there growing up!

    Thanks Mate

it is a problem, I use Netnanny and have had to block all of Youtube due to the nature of some videos, all I do is go up when my daughter wants to use it and sit with her whilst she finds the video she's after...

With these things to be safe the only option is block everything the allow certain sites, but then I am sure most playgrounds have a lot of PC hacking descussions. Just make sure you get simple stuff like a BIOS and Administrator password otherwise they could just by-pass anything you add to block sites on the PC.

The other option is router based blocking software.

while were on the subject of bypassing, who's to say your kid won't just bypass anything you do by bypassing your home pc all together, using a pc while at a friends for example..

blocking access might actually encourage misuse, I does with me anyways... what's wrong with sitting down and explaining things, monitor the history on your computer or have a pc where you can see it.

no sorry you've got me wrong to a degree, im not worried about him going looking for stuff im more worried about what he finds by mistake, to be honest I think hes way off looking for it on purpose and as soon as i think he is trying we will be have a little chat about it, but the last thing i want him coming across is some of the NSFW shit that gets posted here for example!

He will have access to the pc downstairs because me or his mum will be hovering around its just to give him a little bit of independence, anyway the amount of wii games that are on me harddisk I doubt he will even use the pc!

Symantec brought out a great product, was part of their internet security package. But i wouldnt reccomend it as its SHIIT. Netnanny seems ok also. Might install it myself on my sons PC upstairs

That's not what I call porn!!!

But none the less, it is more explicit than I realised and will be adding the site to the banned list for my 9 year old. I don't want him to be one of those teenagers with too much internet access who thinks it is normal when losing his virginity to pop his girlfriend's cherry, then stick it in her arse and shit on her face. Because, thanks to the interweb, this is the next generation of perverts we have created. According to statitstics, 93% of 14-18 year olds think 2girls1cup is a regular Friday night.!!
