    Thanks, I'll try this.......

easily fixed without a nasty reinstall all you have to do is
    get to a command prompt:
The command prompt may display as "X:" - if it does, type "C:" and
press enter (changing the location to the boot drive).
Change directory to the "C:\Windows\winsxs" folder by typing:
    " CD \ " (press Enter)
    " CD \Windows\winsxs " (press Enter)
Rename the file named "Pending.xml" to something else by typing:
    "ren pending.xml pending.xxx" (press Enter)
    reboot ....problem should be gone

No go, I don't have a pending.xml file to rename.

      2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: net stop wuauserv
    2. Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. <LI type=a>At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
Note For a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type the following command, and then press ENTER: regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll
      2. Click OK on each verification message that you receive.
    3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER: net start wuauserv

    I did this...

    1. Downloaded windows updater

    2. Saved it to C:

    3. Opened a command window, got it to C: drive

    4. Typed net stop wuauserv

    5. Then c:\windowsupdate.exe /wuforce (I renamed it as it was stupidly long lol)

    6. Double clicked on the yellow shield and they are installing as I type

EDIT: All installed, rebooted and the world is all good again.
