My reverse light on my Audi 80 seems to have a mind of it's own. Sometimes it comes and sometimes not!
I've checked the fuses and bulbs without success. Any ideas would be welcomed.

years ago mine went in my vectra and i was told it was the micro switch but i have no idea where or if yours would have one of them!
just found this on google
If both lights aren't working and the fuse is OK, then it could be the switch. It will be a bit chunkier than an microswitch. They are usually screwed into the gearbox, in a position where it can be operated by the gear stick (ie. if reverse gear is to the right of the gate, the switch should be on that side). On some models they can be easy to get to. However, on others you almost wonder if they were fitted before the gearbox was installed.

When I was born, I was given a choice - A big dick or a good memory. I don't remember, what I chose
has it got a good clean ground.. ?
Could be a bad earth mate, trace the wiring to the earth point and check, then check the loom connections aren't oxidised and causing a bad connection
Took me ages to press post mate
Okay guys thanks for your help. It's a 95 plate so I guess more than likely the switch has gone.

Obviously I know you want to get it fixed but be aware that none working reversing lights are NOT an mot failure. I had a Micra for my first car and the reverse lights never worked, the guy in the garage said that they were not included in the test.
Check earth wire that feeds the rear lights and check the wires going into the lighting panel in case of bad connection or corrosion if not then focus on the switch at the gear box as you said the lights work when they want to it may just be a sticky switch which a good spray of dw40 or similar lubricant may solve..
Forgot to say give the bulb a check to make sure it getting a good connection.
