Default PC to TV media streaming

    Hi all,

I want to stream live tv from my PC to the TV in another room, the TV has a DVI input and also VGA port, can anyone recommend a wireless piece of hardware to stream this, I also want to stream the sound to the TV.

I've seen some things in Maplin for about £50 but they look shit and don't have the dvi/vga outputs I was looking for.

    All help appreciated.

OK you will need to use a long VGA or DVI cable to be honest. Heres why I think this.

I am assuming the video is live and therefore in a web broswer or simlar This is vitally important as it effect how you can do this.

It is live video you will need to have your PC desktop visable on the TV so a xbox 360 or any other streaming device is no use to you. If we were talking about a video file e.g a movie, then it would be a different story as you can send a AVI file as data wirelessly or over a network cable to a player (ps3 or xbox etc) under the tv and watch it.

As this is not the case its tricky to do anything other than a long video cable. The only things I have seen are called baluns - they convert a PC video signal into data so it can be sent down a Cat5 cable. I think once this is done you could use either a wireless or maybe a powerline plug setup to get the connection to the TV.

    e.g http://www.lektropacks.com/view_prod...ub1=23&show=23

I have never used one so I cannot tell you who well they work - google vga video balun - get one that also does sound as some are vga only. you should be able to plug these into wirless router or powerline plug and send it to another wirless device or powerline plug - like I said its a pain in the arse and most people use the long cable.

so im summary you get 2 vga or dvi +sound video baluns and 2 powerline plugs (probally 200mb speed ones) to do this.

this is useless to you unless you are downloading the video files and then playing them - if you are streaming video "live" from the internet this media file player is not going to help you.

easy way to check - SupraMan Does this allow you to see you PC desktop on the TV ? if not then its no good.

Baluns won't allow you to use the powerline plugs, baluns use cat5 to send the video signal but not as IP data so the homeplugs wouldn't work.

Swiss Tony if you want to try the Baluns route, let me know and i'll stick a couple in the post for you. You may need to wait for a couple of days though because they are somewhere in the garage and I will have to look for them, Also if you are going the cable route let me know how much you need and i'll stick that in the post too.

Just to add, just checked the prices of some of the Baluns and they look like they are all singing/all dancing ones, the ones I have are just basic ones like these...

Where is the sound from the pc going to go, you cannot connect to the VGA/DVI ports of the tv because im pretty sure those ports on a TV do not carry sound.

Swiss Tony: Is it going to run through an amp or do you want it all directly to the tv?

edit: Just realised your first post said to the tv.

for the video wirelessly you can use something like this:

Amazon.com: IOGear Wireless USB to VGA Kit (GUW2015VKIT): Electronics
(seems to get pretty good reviews)

however that doesnt resolve the sound issue.
