    Default Work PC being Monitored

I think my work pc is being monitored. It's became very slow and sluggish of late despite clearing out and defragging.

There's been a few issues with work recently and I'm putting two and two together. I called IT and they seemed very cagey to discuss the issue. Is there any way I can find out from my end?

Do you have an icon by the clock that says vnc? If so when it changes colour you are being watched. You can terminate it using task manager.

Just do your job, stay within the guidelines and you've nothing to be concerned about... if the PC performance is an issue, let the relevant people know. Last thing I would do is counter.

No intention of countering this. I do my job very well I'll let you know. You don't know the full story so don't make assumptions.

Assume your PC is ALWAYS being monitored. Employers and IT have a legal right to do so whether they believe an employee is breaching rules or not.

You may be able to terminate stuff via task manager however if your IT team are any good, they will have created policies that completely prevent this from being done.
In addition, many monitoring applications have no client visible in the systray or anywhere else.

On a side note, PC's do not become sluggish if they are being monitored. I use remote desktop software on a daily basis to my own computer (from work .. and there are no performance issues. If you work in an environment where hot desking using roaming profiles is used and others use your workstation when you're not then this can have an impact on performance.

is this how you treat everyone who tries to offer you advise?

since you mentioned calling 'the it guy' then it is a logical conclusion that it is not your job to maintain the computers, and since tampering, or "misuse" of computers can not only cost you a job but also get you arrested.. I think you should be thanking burner for the wise advise as business won't take snooping very likely either.

if you read the post properly you will see burner wasn't criticising your work, he was merely saying all you should use work pcs for is work, nothing personal and no fucking around in places you shouldn't be.. anything other than programs need to to your job, which I doubt taskmanager falls under since it is a maintenance tool and maintenance isnt your responsiblity, which is obvious considering the it guys are keeping you in the dark..

anyone here worth their brass will confirm, you don't fuck about with work PC's, you do you work and nothing more.. there have been various high profile sackings for much less than snooping..

Mickey is bang on with the paranoia comment.. and so are the it guys at your place of work (keeping tight lipped) If I were working in your it department having you asking questions about stuff which you shouldn't be concearning yourself with / not responsible for, which lets face it is security related (monitoring is security).. then you would have put yourself under the spot-light and i'd be monitoring you too..

but as it has been said already, you probably won't get any obvious signs of monitoring.. the sluggishness is probably down to something else, maybe your web sufring habbits, who knows.. all you gave us to go on was an assumption (then you slam burner for the very same thing, yet he is only trying to help based on what very little knowledge you seem to have/or have provided on the subject).. anyways, best bet is to call in those who's job it is to know about these things and those who are responsible (your it guys)

What do you think they are monitoring? Net usage? If so nothing will be installed on your PC to do this, they will be looking at the proxy log. Can't think of anything else they would want to monitor other than your mail which will be accessible to them as domain admins without using your PC.

As Tombott said, you're not giving us the full facts. What were the issues you've been having at work to even think they would be snooping around your pc?

Because I don't need to do I? I asked a simple question which required a simple answer which I got. You only want to know the full facts due to your own curiousity not because you needed the full facts to give me an answer.

I got my answer now stop being nosey coonts

its common practice to monitor problematic staff members. wouldnt worry about it.

with any luck they'll find all the evidence they need and sack you.

Of course by saying "problematic" I assume you refer to people with balls? Of which I think it was clearly displayed some time ago that you had none

Seeing as you're all such nosey coonts. The IT manager thinks I've been shagging his girlfriend (I haven't). Shortly after airing his suspicions my PC has became sluggish.

    Happy now
