    Default readyboost? any difference?

I bought some flash drives from play.com last week as they were doing 3x 4gb drives for 14.99 and although i know they dont need to be, these are readyboost enabled.

this is the offer i went for from play
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/969242...d/Product.html

anyway I've plugged one in to my vista box (directly into the mobo not a hub or anything) and if im honest i cant tell any difference, I am running 4gb's of ram so i'm guessing that would reduce the impact something like readyboost can have,

anyone know of anyway i can force it to work faster? or is it almost useless with so much ram already onboard?.

Do not think that you will see any difference, they are only really useful for when your machine pages to the HDD, if you have a flash drive plugged it this can be faster and keep the IO's on the HDD down to allow that to do what it needs to but with 4gb or ram you will not see any use for it unless you are running autocad or something...!!!

There is a reg hack to make any use device readyboost as long as it is fast enough it should work..!!

    Not worth it though...

I used a high speed 4gb CF card with readyboost. Not only did I notice a degradation in performance with some apps (Notable World of Warcraft) but I couldn't use any other flash media at the same time.

By the way - if you try this and decide not to use it remember to disable readyflash before removing the flash card Just taking the device out doesn't actually stop Readyboot from being enabled and I found that caused some conflicts.

Only the very latest version (2010) really needs more than 4Gb unless you are working with enormous models, and not that many people have moved over, many have remained with 2008 or before as autodesk have decided to introduce a ribbon interface (which can be turned off anyway).

I have a samsung nc-10 running windows 7 rc1 and it was unbearably slow. Added a 2gb sandisk sd card and it's just about usuable. Can't wait until my 2gb so-dimm arrives.

Readyboost is only effective if you regularly use more RAM than you have in your machine. People with 512MB should see large performance gains all round.

    If you've got 3GB+ it'll prob be a bit of a waste.

Installing Windows on one will slow things down.

USB Sticks are only any good at random access their seek time is 1ms where normal harddrives are about 12ms.

A USB stick's transfer rate is only about 12-20MBps where a hard drive is about 80MBps.

For the USB stick to give you speed benefits you need to be reading lots of small bits of data from it. I've got a Windows install USB stick though and it absolutely hammers installing from a CD/DVD...

ah. i seeeeee. I thought flash drives were superior in almost every way. saved me a lot of hassle as I always fancied running xp off a usb stick.

same here, i use a usb stick for a couple of linux distro's and it seems quick enough but its running on a netbook so its not going to be blisteringly fast,

I've been using another usb drive to install win7 and vista and it's a lot quicker than going down the cd route, last time i installed win7 i think it knocked a good 10 15 mins off the install time
