Default Anyone been on a Nile Cruise?

I've always wanted to go to Egypt and see the sights and today I booked a holiday with Thomas Cook along the Nile, I was wondering if anyone had ever done the whole travel the Nile thing and had any advice for me.

I really dont know what to expect, i.e. am I going to have somewhere to charge my phone, what type of plug adaptor am I going to need. Do I need any jabs? and any info you may think is handy to know.

    Thanks

Default Re: Anyone been on a Nile Cruise?

I when to Egypt just over 2 years ago and did a 3 night cruise from Luxor to Aswan Dam

Generally the format goes like this

Board boat travel to locations during evening hours generally
Up for breakfast breakfast time are set the day before depending on the itinerary for that day
Get onto buss go sight seeing
Back to boat lay in the sun ( may set of at this point )
    After Noon TEA
lay in the sun some more
    Dinner
Evening entertainment (if you can still cope after the days heat..)

    Some Advise

You do need jabs don`t waste any time get see your doctor now

The Boat I was on had local power outlets 2 pin European style

Take sensible shoes and even if your wearing shorts ware some good walking boots when ever you go sight seeing you basically end up doing a lot of walking usually on uneven rocky or sandy surfaces trainers and flip-flops just don`t cut it..

For the ladys blond good looking women get bothered to fuck by the local men best bet when out on trips is to cover up a little on legs shoulders and cleavage believe me your missus will so get pissed off with the hassle

Chances are you will get the shits it happens its Egypt, my advise soon as you get on the boat stick a roll of loo paper from the room in your going out bag and leave it their believe me you will need it..

If you do get the shits and im sure you will, make sure you have some imodium instants with you, generally it better not to take then, but if you are out and about you will need some relief, take some alcohol hand wash and use it before you eat or after handling the local money its filthy

Pay attention to the guide he will be with you all the time and make sure you know the sailing times, they will go with out you if you are not back on the boat and it will be up to you to catch up with it..

Make sure you see as much as you can if they offer a flight to a location take it if you can afford it some of the long bus rides can be horrendous ..

I know i have mentioned allot of negative sides of Egypt but these are the things you wish some one told you about, there are two types of holiday in Egypt, The Sharm beach holiday or Cruise sight seeing..

I will leave all the good thinngd for you to discover yourself...

PS. buy a guide book before you go there are so many hidden little gems in Egypt you will be gutted if you miss one i really liked the Mummy museum in Luxor..

I think Tim lad has covered everything..
We had a great time on that cruise and would heartily recommend it..
We did a balloon ride at dawn in the Valley of the Kings and that was really something.

The Egyptians are very friendly but don't let any one trying to sell you stuff get the upper hand... if you show weakness they will pester you right back to the boat.

We didn't suffer from the trots at all but it's wise to take some antibacterial hand cleanser and use it..

Good luck on the cruise you won't regret it..

I went on a nile cruise about 7 years ago with my now ex-wife, it was a fantastic holiday.

My one bit of advice is, have lots of loose change, because when you stop off at various places, you will be mithered non stop by beggars, and giving them a few coins helps, and going into towns at night, is not a good idea.

thanks all - this is just the sort of advice that I was looking for, I think the phone thing was more because I would be lost without it and plan to use it for all my planning and time management.

I'll pick up some antibacterial hand wash/wipes
Go to the doctors and get my jabs
    Get a 2 pin adapter
    Get some Immodium instants

Thanks a lot for all the info

    Actually that's a good point !

One of the tricks is to give you a free gift even putting it in your bags and then expect you to pay for it later don`t take anything unless you have agreed a price first, at the pyramids you will get people giving you "free" neckles and put it on you, give it back, if they don't take it put it on the floor and walk away, if you keep it on you will be a target all day..

Best advise i was given to deal with "the Hassle" it to completely ignore them literally no eye contact and walk past them, if some one persist say (or shout) "La" this means No.

Some interesting picture for you believe it or not these locals people in the little boats where selling stuff and throwing it on board, to pay for it you put the money in the bag they threw it up in and chuck it back down awesome !!!

One of the many surprises you will come across in Egypt !!!

My Mum and Dad went last year and everything Tim.Lad is backed up by what my Mum and Dad said.

    Constant hassle from traders
Keep an eye on simple things you buying like bottled water, one place tried to charge the equivelant of 30p for a bottle when normally it is 10p or somthing like that. you can barter for stuff everywhere.
The men don't just go after the good looking women
Don't think the boats are backwards they are fully kitted out boats with lights, power and running water. When they boarded they were given a tour of the whole boat even looking in to the fridges and ovens to show they were clean which my Mum as a kitchen worker at the time was impresed with how clean it was.

Im not sure about the footwear though my Mum and Dad both wore sandals all the time but they wear them most of the time in the UK so they have tough feet.

Just don't underestimate the heat and wear a hat as much as you can.

Wow how could i forget about the heat its so hot out their especially in the Temples and Valleys where there is zero wind, because your sweat evaporates instantly you have no idea your burning up, while I was in Egypt we say two people pass out from heat exhaustion right in front of us, remember drink lots of water and a mean lots...

No, no, no. It's not worth ten. You're supposed to argue. "What? Ten for that, you must be mad!"

just got back this week and had a fantastic time, I'll post some pics when I get chance to sort through them all - took about 500 photos, didn't get to go to Cairo so a little disapointed on that front but would highly recommend it.

The souvineer shop on board was pretty bad when it came to haggling but I got all my gifts from him at once so as I was spending about £60 I managed to knock £10 off.

The on board jewler was relitively cheep and again I managed to get £30 off a kartoosh I had made with my name on in 18ct white gold. Although I heard stories that he wouldn't haggle with other people so I must have caught him on a good day

I didn't use the massure (masage man ) but he would knock a couple of quid off if you asked him according to the ladies on board that used him.

The bar prices were awful if you had the imported spirits and their was no haggling on that at all but the local spirits were much more reasonable in comparison and we didn't have to pay or tip till the end of the week.

Haggling at the Aswan market was an experiance, one lady in our party got a "silver" ring down from £20 to £2.50 after saying no over and over and eventually walking away. Unfortunately the following morning her finger was black and the ring was in the bin, lol.
