3 sim in a 2g iphone wont work?

can I use my "3" sim card in an unlocked 2g iphone? Im currently on 3 and today bought a 2g iphone off someone which has been unlocked before but when i put my sim card in I just get "invalid sim" is this because my sim is 3g? - i have read somewhere that 3 sims now check for a 3g signal before they will work and obviously a 2g iphone wont pick up a 3g signal.
I know fuck all about iphones so am treading very carefully as I doint want to mess up and brick it so any advice would be much appreciated.

The sim won't work in the phone they aren't compatible with each other. Nothing to do with 3 being spoilsports

its ok I`ve given it to my girlfriend now and bough an 8gb 3g iphone today out the paper now to to unlock that!

I use an 8GB 3G iPhone on three network with no problems at all

My wifes 3 sim works in my iPhone 3g.

On a different note, my wife has her 3 sim card in a Nokia 6300 and they sent her a text about 9 days ago saying that if she didn't put the sim in a 3 phone the sim would stop working in 5 days. It has obviously been over 5 days so shall we just ignore it?

no you shouldnt. their t&c's state you have to use a 3g phone (it doesnt have to be a three phone)

The same text gets sent to people who switch off 3g on their handsets to save battery etc. They send it out when they see you repeatedly using 2g where they know there is a 3g signal.

yeah its someting to do with when you dont use the 3g signal it drops onto 02`s network (I think) and 3 obviously have to pay them for usage of their network so basically they arent making any money off you cos your using another network.

yes as long as you buy it before os3.1 comes out . it may be ok after that but no one knows yet.

Sorry for jumping off topic again here but Im totally new with iphones (yesterday was the first time I held one)
ok So Im on a 3 contract - I have an 8gb 3g iphone on software ver 3.0 they guy said it wasnt unlocked as he was an 02 customer (who I bought it off) I have looked through the apps he has installed and he has Cydia on it and installous - as these are 3rd party programs does that mean the phone is already jailbroken? if it is then what is my next step to unlocking it so I can use my 3 sim? - be gentle with me

Yes it's jailbroken. In cydia add a new source (manage sources edit add) http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com let it refresh and search for and install ultrasn0w. Reboot and your three sim should work.

You just need to sort the Internet/mms settings then but one step at a time

ok getting http://cydia.zodttd.com - cached failure when i follow the ultrasn0w link in cydia and also another error saying sub-process bzip2 returned an error code(2)- any ideas?
