Wii Been out of the scene for a while....need some advice.

Right, been out of the scene since the likes of the D2C2 arrived which was a fair time ago, after a 2 min google it appears there is now a D2E and D3 chips out.

Thing is, a lad I know wants me to chip his Wii for him, so what's the best way to go about this?

Personally I have always preffered hardwiring a chip, but have seen lots of info about softmodding. One question I have about soft modding is that, is it like the flashing the 360? As in once it's done you just pop the game in and it boots, or do you need some form of loader to go with it?

If I were to go the hardwire route, what chip(s) are recommended at the mo for these newer drives. Have not seen the Wii or got the serial from it yet, so have no idea what drive is in it, but he said he'd check the serial when he gets home and let me know so I can check it, just gathering some info at the mo.

    Cheers!

EDIT: To softmod it, do I just follow this guide? I've got all the following

    A Wii Console
Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess (Wii Version!)
An SD Memory card (anything from 32Mb up to 2GB)
    An SD card reader
USB hard disk/USB Stick - Optional only required for the USB Loader

Is that all that's needed (plus the d/l link in the guide obv)? Cheers!

20 views and not 1 response, can anyone point me in the right direction? From a bit more reading around, it appears a wiikey 2 will do the job if I go for a modchip, but what about the softmod option??

If I were to softmod it, will it work with any drive, and does the Wii need to have a certain FW on it? Also, with the softmod can you just stick a game in and load it like with a chip, or do you have to use a special loader?

    Cheers!

21 views with me mate. Don't know a sausage about softmods & wii's just a nosey fecker. I normally think it's best to wait until an evening session has been in to get a learned reply on things

I chipped mine two years ago so as much in the dark as you.
I do know with the banner bomb you no longer need Zelda.

I have a hardmod and softmod. Hardware is best. But software is coming on very well and works with most games now.
    Advanteages of hardmod:
loads full speed softmod is almost full speed but not there yet
Loads all games again softmod almost there
In my experience there has never been any issue with my hardmod and updates whereas nintendo keep trying to stop the softmods almost every update (but they always fail )
I think thats all the differences.
    Now to next part.
The softmod most use requiers you to run your games via a program from homebrew channel. However this new one has just come out http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=172349 and it seems this loads them via the disc channel like you would do with a chip but i have not tried it yet probably will later this week and report back.

Cheers mate! Will stick to hardmod until the softmod becomes like the 360 where all games are supported and it loads normally without messing around.

I still prefer a chip to soft mod - and (IMHO) d2pro 6 wire install is the best of the bunch

i softmodded a brand new wii last week and it went like a dream m8, had trouble with 1 game but i sorted that out no prob, and theres always help on here, these guys are great at helping out.

but i and i guess everyone would agree a hardmod is always better, but the softmod is brilliant if you cant or dont want to chip it

@ face, so basicly this loads your games just like originals from the normal disk channell in the top left yes??, cool, actually i load my games from a chan like that anyway the backup loader chan, this new one must auto boot em or something??

Right, cheers guys, like I said, its for a guy I know, not myself (I've got YAOSM on mine) and to save the hassle of him phoning me saying "oh xxx game doesn't work, what do I do?" I think I'll hardmod it.

Just that the softmod seemed so simple (and obv free), but until it's like flashing the 360 where it works exactly the same as a hardmod I'll pass.

    Cheers !

Softmods have their place I guess, ie they are free, but you really want a chip in there if just want to slap a game in there and play it, without having to worry about firmware updates knocking out your loaders, and which game works with which loader etc etc. This is particularly true if there are other members of the family using the wii.
Ive moved over to using SunKey chips now, and they have been absolutely brilliant. One size fits all, 10 minutes to fit, no soldering, just fits in-line on the dvd ribbon cable.

Well I would be looking at a £40 target price, but they really are easy enough to do yourself now that they are so easy to fit. The number of screws may look daunting, but you soon get used to them.

Yes, burn the iso, the machine sees it as no different to an original.

hard mod and softmods can be reversed, ofcourse with a hardmod you have the issue of the solder being visible but if you are thinking along the lines of returning it to Nintendo, I very much doubt they would give you any grief over it.

My advice is, If you can hard mod it, then do it, its not expensive and it is overall, still the better option.

Any of the current mods will do, last one I fitted was a Wiikey2 and it was only 6 or so wires, all of which went to solder pads, not chip legs, an absolute breeze.

Whatever method you choose, you will still encounter the error002 problem. As far as i know modchips havnt been updated to fix this like they were the 001 error. Getting round this is quite easy though. Install the homebrew channel and run problem games through a simple loader called Gecko, this will usually update and fix itself when and if its needed.
