Default PC - Dual Sound Output

I'm not sure if this is the best place for this question. Admin feel free to move if neccessary.

I have an HDMI lead coming out the Graphics card Radeon 4870 HDMI Vapor-X and straight into the HD TV, this works fine and the sound comes out of the TV when I play a video file.

I'd like to be able to play games on the computer with the "game" audio coming out of the PC speakers/headphones via the motherboard at the same time as playing video files through the TV.

    Is this possible?

    sorry m8 just seen this
I use a USB headset that work separately to the onboard sound card so I think USB speakers will do the same

Well my speakers and headpones would run off the motherboard whereas the HDMI sound comes out of the Graphics card.

The problem is, how do I separate the two audio's in Windows?

It's really a setting in windows or my media player I'm after. I need to somehow force the media player (either VLC or WMP) to use the HDMI sound output whilst keeping the system (motherbaord) as the default sound output to play games.

Just not sure if it can be done..

I'm sure I used to do this years ago but as soon as I saw your post I went all the way through media player and couldn't find the setting. Checked again and it still hasn't turned up so I suspect removing the option is one of MS's many "improvements". I think you can still select the sound card windows will use by default if you go control panel, sound and multimedia devices. Hopefully then, there will be a setting in the game to let you use the 2nd sound card instead.

I'm thinking going the other way round if possible. Keep the games/computer in default but try to force the or "a" media player to the HDMI..

Just not sure it's possible or if there's a media player out there that allows this.
