Default Excellent tool for converting MKV files for the 360

    Hi,

I've been looking around for a tool to convert MKV to something that could play on the 360. I know you can transcode to WMV, but I didn't want to do that as 1.) it takes ages and 2.) you lose quality converting video that way

So after much hunting, I found this awesome tool that has NO transcoding at all

    Try it, I'm very impressed

What's wrong with the audio? Sounds pretty good to me

If people are converting small files then fine, but if they are converting .MKV movies with 5.1 audio, they should really be grabbing the WMV equivalent in the first place to play on the 360.

Watching HD stuff with 2 channel audio is naff - might as well get a nice 2-pass Xvid rip instead

There is no WMV equiv for what I want. 2 channel audio on a TV is no different to AC3, I don't understand how you can compare. Also, the video difference between HD and an Xvid is huge, in my experience

    So yeah

I've always used MKV2VOB for stuff like this. Normally for PS3, but works just aswell for the 360.

I agree with Ganty, piece of piss to use and quality is fantastic, and works both for PS3 and 360

Funny, I've used MKV2VOB for the PS3 and it works great, but it never seems to work for the 360... the file doesn't show, and when I rename it to MP4, it says file unplayable?

No WMV equivalent? All modern material is avilable in either XviD, X264 or WMV formats - I can only suggest you are not looking hard enough in the right places!

Additionally, you didn't state in your OP that you were were watching it on a bog standard TV - you wanna get yourself a nice, cheap 5.1 surround system and get with the times chap - it's gonna sound a bit better than some poxy TV speaker.

To sum up, if you're going to bother watching HD stuff and going through the bother and time of converting it, don't short-change yourself and get the audio quality sorted as well, ffs.

Additionally, I didn't state otherwise, you just assumed that because I play HD content, I'd be doing so through a 5.1 sound system. Thanks for the advice, but I'm happy with my HDTV, thanks

To those who use MKV2VOB, is there anything I need to tick especially for the 360? Like I say, the converted files work fine with the PS3 but no go on the 360
