Default 3 Way Network Switch Box?

    Is there such a thing?

I have my internet setup to my router. My Router is in one room, my XBox360 and PS3 and in another. I have 1 RJ45 lead running to my PS3/XBox360 and have to keep pulling out the RJ45 to each Console.

Can I split this 'feed' with a switch? Preferably I'd like to get the feed split 3 ways. 1 to the PS3, 1 to the XBox and another for a laptop. Only one of these will be used at a time, but can I get a good looking (preferably shiny black) box under my TV that will switch the feed?

Alternatively, can I just fix another router on this feed (from another router?)

Just want to make this neat and not have to keep pissing about with the lead all the time!

If it is possible, can I connect my Netgear Cable Router to a Netgear ADSL Router, without using the WAN port to say LAN1 and there share LAN2,3 & 4 on the other router obviously giving fixed IP addresses? Will it just act as a 'Network Extension'? Do I need to have any special settings on the ADSL Router?

Your normal netgear ADSL router stays where it is, you hook up the switch from its WAN port (should be a normal ethernet port but a diff colour to ports number 1/2/3/4) to any of the ports on the router. Then your hook up your 360/ps3 to ports 1/2/3/4 on the switch. When you hook up your switch to the router, login into the switch and run the Netgear discovery network..it will do all the config/ips for you

It does work because i had a similar setup at uni

I think you have this round the wrong way.

My main router is a Cable Router (VM). I have 3 ADSL routers knocking about.

I want to connect my PS3 and XBox to the ADSL router, then the ADSL router to my Cable Router.

Wouldn't a simple hub do the job? I mean, you wouldn't be able to 'switch' but you'd only have one console on at a time right?

if you plug in a cable from one of the ADSL ethernet ports into the cable routers wan port..run the connection discovery wizard on the cable router and it should work fine.

What I would do is leave the main router (the one connected to the broadband) as it is except for change the pool of dhcp allocated addresses to give yourself an exclusion zone (so for example router is 192.168.0.1, and the first ip it will dish out will be something like 192.168.0.10). Now on the 2nd router, disable dhcp and give it a static ip within that exclusion zone (something like 192.168.0.2).

This should basically act as adding switches (or a network extension as you put it). If you don't disable dhcp, they will all be trying to allocate ip addresses, all in their preferred range and you probably won't get much working.

ADSL - ROuter leave exactly as is then for where your xbox and ps3 is: buy a switch and a 2 x cat5 cable.... plug cat5 from rj45 (cat5/6) into switch and from switch use two cat5 to plug in xbox and ps3

a switch will cost you about 4 quid and a cable about a quid from any PC shop:

    aria.xx.xx
    microdirect.xx.xx
    scan.xx.xx
    spotonuk.xxx

all of these sell this stuff..... PM me for more advice
Special K+ enjoyed as a healthy breakfast!
