Police investigating the murder of Joseph Mark Cook, a fine art student at Leeds Metropolitan University, have said he died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

Officers were called to a house in Ebberston Terrace, in the Hyde Park area of Leeds, at about 2pm on Monday where they found the 20 year-old's body in a first-floor bedroom. No one else was in the house.

A post-mortem examination on the body of the student from Newcastle upon Tyne concluded that his death was the result of multiple stab wounds. Formal identification was also carried out to confirm his identity.
Detectives revealed that a knife believed to be the murder weapon was recovered from the house.

Mr Cook was in the second year of a fine art degree and officers said a bungled burglary might be behind his death, but inquiries are also being made into any other possible motives.

Investigation leader Detective Superintendent Bill Shackleton said: ''Our inquiries so far have established that Joe was last seen alive at about 3.15pm on Sunday when he accompanied a friend to a nearby flat before leaving her to return to his home in Ebberston Terrace.

''We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw Joe after that time or had any contact with him. We have been building up a picture of Joe's lifestyle and his movements over the weekend with help from a number of his friends and we are keen for that to continue.

''We would appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious around the property in Ebberston Terrace on Sunday or Monday or who saw anyone coming or going from the house to get in touch immediately.''
