    Question Anyone work for Rockstar?

    Afternoon chaps.
I'm currently happy enough in my job; good money, have a laugh etc etc but out of the blue yesterday I've been asked to go for an interview with Rockstar North in Edinburgh for a job I haven't applied for... Systems Engineer. Someone has obviously vouched for me.
I'm in Germany at the moment installing a network so I had to decline but they've come back asking me to do a telephone interview on Tuesday. I think working for Rockstar could be pretty cool so I've agreed to it.

I've never participated in a telephone interview before and it's been many years since my last "normal" interview.
Any pointers for the telephone side? Is it pretty much just a general chat to see if they think they'll get on with me and if it's then worth pulling me in for a face to face? Surely no point in asking technical questions as you could be sitting in front of Google!

They'll ask you technical questions for sure I reckon. My friend recently went for a computer games programming job and they asked him about how the most efficient way to find if two objects had collided. I'm not a games programmer but it involved some ray tracing opposed to the obvious answer of doing differentiation of the two lines and checking for common solutions as this is too cpu expensive. Be prepared!

Infact my mate shares a mansion with the owner of Rockstar games. He lives in half and the director lives in the other half up in edinburgh but i've not chatted to him in a while. Used to go to uni together.

It mat sound daft but dress up in a suit as if you were there in person. It will get you 'into character' and you will feel as if you were actually there.

I used to train people for job interviews etc in my last job and this is what the 'experts' recommend.
I understand and accept that some people hold opinions that are different to my own. Living in a free and democratic society, I fully embrace and respect their right to be wrong.

Get on the blower Juicey! Stick a word in.

Suit might be a problem as I'll be crawling around roof space in Germany firing in Cat6 but I appreciate the sentiment. The telephone aspect of this worries me though as I won't be able to "read" them (body language etc) and vice-versa.
Do you think it would be worth suggesting a Skype / webcam scenario?

personally mate i would just do the phone call as you are, wouldnt ask for skype etc.

yes phone interviews are harder because you cant judge the person as well but just listen carefully to them and you should be able to tell if they are going for it or not

    good luck

If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

I've been involved in some of the interviews at my work and one of the most important elements is that you will intergrate into the existing team. Make sure your enthusiatic as well as knowledgable. We have hired people with great skills only to find they do not fit in the team and these contractors haven't lasted very long.

Show initiative as well. Read up something which will relate to your new job and try and fit it in somewhere. "Oh I was reading a book on optimisation the other day actually and ... " and your hoping they'll go right this guy is making an effort.

The tests we give to programmers are really easy but catch people out on the spot. E.g reverse a list of integers. Just have your wits about you! There is a limit to what they can ask down the phone.

The chances are you'll get a good feel for the job in the phone interview but I would expect a second interview if you we're to get a job.

    Good luck!

Only really managed to get the job spec the last couple of days... as I say I din't apply for it.
Nothing I can't do so the way I see it I am interviewing them the same as they are me.

Rockstar North... big brand name and all that but surely the GTA franchise can't go on forever. Manhunt was OK but not a huge seller. The Agent sounds good but if it flops?? It might not be the smartest career move in this current climate but I'll listen to what they have to say.
If money got tight with Take Two you can almost bet your arse it would be Rockstar North and Leeds that got hosed.

    Thanks for all the tips.
I'll leave naked webcams for next time.

    Went chuffing great today.
2nd interview lined up now with Rockstar New York in the next week to ten days. Just need to get a mutuallly convenient time as I'm on a fecking PRINCE2 course next week. Then it's a third interview with the President and Senior VP.

IT Manager has been with them since DMA Design days so you couldn't blag her on the history of the company etc and she really knew her stuff. I was pretty impressed with the whole setup.

Thanks again for the tips and support!

2nd interview finally arranged for 1900h TONIGHT!
Been playing phone tag trying to get it arranged with their IT guys in New York. It's been called off three times already for one thing or another.

Hope I don't screw it up now. Been struggling to rememeber their setup and what kit they have etc.

I'll keep you posted. I want to know how The Agent is going and if I get a shot.

    Cheers chaps.
The technical questions were tough but I got through them OK although totally screwed up the easy stuff! Again, because it was over the phone it was hard to "read" how it was going.
Just a waiting game now for feedback to see if I get to level 3 of the process.

    Fingers crossed.
