How much is 'Fair Usage' on o2 iPhone contract?

The main reason i jailbroke my iPhone was to enable internet tethering for my laptop when i'm offshore. All works well with the ben.m settings and i'm online with it now...

The only concern i have with it is the data i'm using. I can't find anything concrete about how much i should be using but i imagine there are people out there who hammer the data allowance on their phones everyday while all i want to do is a bit of facebook and the odd chat.

Anyone got any ideas as to what i should 'cap' myself at to avoid suspicion?

I just stick to stuff that I can do on my iPhone. If you are downloading torrents etc or big files then it could arrise suspicion as that type of traffic would be easy to spot.

No torrents or anything... just light surfing really. Just wondered if if could get away with the odd skype call or stuff like that. I don't think the connection would be up to it mind you...

The connection is pretty good at work. I watched the F1 practice live on my laptop tethering. Are you using the cable or wifi? Just set mine up to tether using wifi which is good

I'm using the usb cable but only for power reasons. Might try it over bluetooth and see how it goes though. I had originally used the iphone modem app but it was terrible over wi-fi so I installed the benm settings. Works a treat

As for it, 3 say 1GB is fair use so im guessing its the same for 02. They send you a text saying 'STOP IT OR ELSE WE WILL DISCONNECT YOU. YOU'VE GONE OVER YOUR LIMIT' or something to that effect

Na, i'm an engineer in the merchant navy and a bunch of the ships i work on are laid up in Loch Striven with no work so i'll have as good as signal as they get at whatever town is closest.

I'll just use the tether and see if they pester me for more money or threaten to cut me off. I'll just say i've been watching a lot of youtube on the phone! "There's an app for that"...

What tethering software are you guys using ? I don't want to pay the ridiculous amount that O2 want you to pay extra ? My phone is Jailbroken 3G btw !

set up wireless on your laptop as adhoc and connect with your iphone and it will work

I've just had a letter through from o2 telling me i've been taking the piss with my 'unlimited' data package.

I got a txt about 2 weeks ago asking me to cut down, then got a letter through today. They said if i go over my limit (not specified!!) then they will cut my data off until my next bill.

I've checked online and i downloaded 7.5GB in 2 months. My phone is still connected and only use it for light use now. I took the piss for the last 2 months cos i was changing internet providers and needed net access.

I downloaded work emails to laptop (every day)
Downloaded a 900mb DivX movie.
Downloaded 3 xbox live demos & 1 arcade game.
Downloaded a number of mp3 albums
Then the usual internet browsing, odd small download.

I wouldn't worry too much, they warn you before they take action

7.5GB eh? I won't go anywhere near that so hopefully won't have anything to worry about.

As for software, i'm not using anything. Just downloaded the settings for o2 from BenM.at and was off and running. After it installed all i had to do was respring and switch the tethering toggle on under settings/general/network and connect the usb cable (or bluetooth if you so wish). Seems a lot more stable than the other methods i'd tried too.
