Tech Best software for converting DVDs to DivX/XVid

    Hi all,

I've finally decided it's time to convert my DVD collection (550+ disks now) as large HDD's are so cheap these days, I figure I could get a couple of 1TB (mirrored) disks and throw my entire DVD collection on to them.

Some time ago i used autoGK to convert my movies, but that required I use something like dvd shrink first to rip the files from DVD to be converted. I googled around and it seems there's a few "one stop shop" type programs out atm, but I wondered what the one that people have used and recommended are? I don't want to have to use 2 different apps to rip then convert though, already it's looking like it'll take the best part of a year for me to convert everything

So what do you all use to rip DVD's to divx?

    Thanks in advance

Staxrip is the one ive used, although I have only ever used it to convert dvd files, not from the disk itself, it may have the option to do so though.

I would def recommend trying it though even if you need to rip the dvd first, the results I got from it were fantastic.

You will get better results using the mkv format too, A 1-1.5gig mkv can usually retain the full resolution and quality of a retail disk.

Thanks mate, i'll see if that can rip from disk.

The only problem with mkv is that the ps3 + 360 can't play them, so i'm restricting myself already to devices which can play the format Without me using some kind of server to transcode the file as it streams.

Thanks for that 909, was looking for something that converts to mkv in a good quality. What do you use to rip the dvd itself? Ideally want to rip them at high quality. Is DVD Shrink the way to go to rip the dvd?

    Thanks

As long as there is no protection then set it to DVD9 and it does the job very well. If the disc in question is protected then good old Slysoft AnyDVD can usually get round most issues. Elaborate Bytes CloneDVD2 is another good one for ripping a dvd, again, used in conjunction with AnyDVD.

I tried AoA DVD converter last night, it did the job ok, albeit slowly, but at least it's a start until someone suggests something better.

I see xillisoft do one too, I'll try that one this week and report back.

    Thanks

Gog, have you got a newzbin link or nzb to a working dvdfab? I just grabbed two off newzbin but both had trojans in them.

    Just keeping you updated.

I've tried xilisoft DVD Ripper, initially I thought all was well, so i've done about 5 movies. On scanning through them though, 2 of them seem to loose synch (tried VLC + MPC to play them in), so will avoid doing the rest of my collection in that one.

    _Belial,

Have you tried out Magic DVD Ripper? It works very well for me, it can create output files in a large variety of different formats and it's relatively quick. I've never tried any of the others so I cannot tell you how it'll work in comparison.

Having said that, it's not freeware so I suppose it won't be at the top of your list. Nevertheless, I thought it might be a good idea to try it.

    Hope this helps.

I use AVS Video Convertor. Not desperately fast but you can specify exact format of output.

Well I tried Magic DVD ripper last night, unfortunatley, seems to be no real control over the codec it uses, and although the audio/video was all in synch when playing on VLC, when playing it on my popcorn hour, yes it was in synch, but the indexes in the file must be messed up as i couldnt fast-forward or rewind during the movie at all without it messing up.

    ,...... so the hunt continues

Yeah ripping isnt' the problem though, I wanted something that'll just go straight from DVD to DivX/Xvid/mkv without having to use 2 different apps
