Sorry to go slightly off topic but its relevant if oE went to purchase...

I hear that the xtreamer has quite a loud fan on it when played as standard but you have options to slow it down/disable it?

Is that an issue with the unit or just a handful of people being really fussy?

I've got an eGrate media tank which runs the NMT software and its painful slow on first boot but once its up its great with YAMJ etc.

There is a guy on ebay selling the newer eGrate unit which is tiny and no room for a hdd for £110 del. So in the same price bracket as xtreamer.

i think the fan is only needed if you have an internal hard drive inside it (2.5") and this can be set to low, also there is an add on cooler you can buy: http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/aca...a_players.html which basically is a big heatsink you fit on it so you can turn the fan off to have it silent.

ive got a popcorn and imo i think it rocks, also have a xtreamer, been sat in its box for 2 months, not had chance to set it up. will do one day!

edit: dont forget the new WDTV2 is out now too, which has ethernet but cant fit a Hard drive inside it, only streaming, can be had for £106 now from: http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=31384

    Guys,

I been looking at options and appricate the advice.

If I got a PCH it would be left on all the time as I would intergrate NZB downloads into it.
Reading up on it its only the slow boot time people dont seem to like - and that would not bother me.

The processor speed limits the download speed too, I get 24 meg all day long on both my iMac and MacBook but the best attainable on the PCH is 15, and that's pushing it!!
Slow menus and the constantly spinning Hard Drive make it less than ideal!

mine doestn have a slow boot time at all. Plus I never actually turn it off, as far as a constantly spinning hard drive goes you need to turn off some of the services mate, i.e. if you do run nzb service then the drive will never stop spinning. When I press my standby button disk spins down, also spins down after certain time of inactivity, dunno what firmware you lot are running but hte latest one solves some issues, and the boot time from cold has been vastly improved. As for it running hot, I took the lid off and put four small washers underneath and then screwed it back on this lets the hot air escape and I have had no problems. Also I find it runs quiet with the drive im using. Couldnt reccomend one enough mate.

I had turned off all the guilty apps as recommended and it still spins, the washers idea is a good one though and I'll definitely do that.
