Default AntiVirus for Windows 7 x64

    Hello Everyone.

Just a quick one...I'm about to install Windows 7 for the first time ever (not even seen it running on anything yet) and I need to know which Anti-virus I should be using.

Currently using Spybot and Norton Corporate on my XP machine...would these be ok to use on 7?

    Thanks.

MSE, as NOD has bloated up and is a pain to keep running with dodgy passes.

I use MSE on my Win 7 64bit but acidentally visited a Piratebay page even though I dont use Torrents and my machine got infected. MSE was running, I thought it was anti-virus and antispyware. In the end I installed the latest malwarebytes and cleaned the shit. So I am keeping the 2 together as malwarebytes offers decent realtime protection.

Like Bub, was happily recommending MSE, but it let me down the other day with my netbook.

Completely my fault, but i did expect a little more from MSE. Downloaded a dodgy version of SureThing CD Labeler and it installed all manner of shite on the netbook! Normally only d/l from trusted places, but was in a hurry so clearly a dick for that.

When installing the dodgy app, it took a while to do anything, which got my suspicions up, so I turned the netbook off. On reboot it was too late and usual popups and sys tray icons were going bonkers.

After a few initial scans, MSE found a few things, but didn't stop the infection. MBAM found more items, but only part stopped the problem. NOD32 v4 found some other bits and stopped more of the problem. Combofix, detected rootkit, as which point I re-imaged the netbook.

My gripe is that MSE didn't even blink when the app was downloaded, or executed. It didn't even make much of a song and dance about it after the reboot, when all the trojans were activated.

SO. Best plan IMO is, once your image is working all nice and the way you want. Take an image of it with Acronis True Image or similar. Ensure all your important stuff is on separate drive, partition and is backup up.

Seems no A/V is 100% reliable at the moment.

Think MBAM is still a must on all PC's tho.

You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

Hi DJ, did you not try and clean with Malwarebytes I bet it would have done a proper clean, so far its never let me down on whatever machine its on.
Do not trust MSE on its own, you definately need a decent realtime Spyware package running alongside it

MBam did clean what it found and I would say halved the problem.

What I think happened was that MSE let in the box of tricks (rootkit) and then on reboot a load of trojans activated. MBam was able to clear the trojans once visible, but the rootkit remained. NOD32 was able to stop some elements of the rootkit from re-spawning, but at that point I have no trust left in the system, so a full re-install / re-image is the best bet.

I can prob get the file again, if anyone wants to test it out!

Rootkits are shits, and even with the rootkit removal tools about, you are never really sure it's all gone. I heard some can sit in recovery partitions or make a new one to hide in, so even some re-installs won't get rid. Prob a degree of scaremongering there tho tbh.

Makes you want to move over to Mac then for everyday surfing

This might be worth a shot for future infections of Rootkits
