Completely my fault, but i did expect a little more from MSE. Downloaded a dodgy version of SureThing CD Labeler and it installed all manner of shite on the netbook! Normally only d/l from trusted places, but was in a hurry so clearly a dick for that.

When installing the dodgy app, it took a while to do anything, which got my suspicions up, so I turned the netbook off. On reboot it was too late and usual popups and sys tray icons were going bonkers.

After a few initial scans, MSE found a few things, but didn't stop the infection. MBAM found more items, but only part stopped the problem. NOD32 v4 found some other bits and stopped more of the problem. Combofix, detected rootkit, as which point I re-imaged the netbook.

My gripe is that MSE didn't even blink when the app was downloaded, or executed. It didn't even make much of a song and dance about it after the reboot, when all the trojans were activated.

SO. Best plan IMO is, once your image is working all nice and the way you want. Take an image of it with Acronis True Image or similar. Ensure all your important stuff is on separate drive, partition and is backup up.

Seems no A/V is 100% reliable at the moment.

Think MBAM is still a must on all PC's tho.

Even MBAM isn't perfect. I'm currently rebuilding an infected pc - a user installed mbam to try and clean it up but had no luck at all.

However, my personal recommendation would be mse so it shows nothing catches everything.

Anyone got a link to results of any trials between kaspersky and mse/forefront?

Maybe, but I blame myself for the infection really. MSE just didn't do much of a job to stop it. I'm sure MSE is fine for most users browsing and email etc, just don't download stupid shit from stupid places and you'll be okay!

Still, like I said MBAM could well be needed as well.

Hey guys, Wondering if you could help. I was using MSE on my x86 win 7 and it was running fine. I upgraded to x64 win 7 and it keeps crashing every time I try to install it. I have tried installing it as administrator but keeps crashing at exactly the same point. Keeps stating MSE has stopped working and had to close. Any ideas?

There's a different package for MSE for x64 mate - have you downloaded that from the MS website?

Guessing you'll need to deinstall the old one.

Starting to panic now. The amount of people who have asked me to install Windows 7 with MSE.. They are all coming back because of the 'Windows MSE isn't Genuine' business. Dam it. I'm gonna be busy!

Why dont you take off MSE? I Dont like it especially since you have to update the engine manually. Ive been using avast free for the last couple of weeks, works really well.

I was keen on MSE but had a similar scare so I actually stumped up and PAID for ENOD.. not a very common occurence for me but it has been solid so far..
I reckon peace of mind is sometimes worth paying for..

For what it's worth, I'm using Win7 (fixed) and MSE.

    Not had any such issues.

Used the original Hazar loader v1.3 (or some really old version anyway!) ages ago tho...

Not justifying MSE, as it did fuck me over once as well. I posted about it earlier in this thread.

NOD 32 v3 started arseing me about on some XP machines (Not booting properly, fuck knows why) so uninstalled from them too.

Looking to find a new Anti Virus friend for XP and Win7, but giving MSE one last go first...

AVG Free gets a thumbs up from me too, running Win 7 x64 with no issues so far, previously ran AVG Free on Vista x64 again no issues

MSE is good too but still relatively new to the Anti Virus scene.

I read the latest windows updates could stop the loaders so may have had nothing to do with MSE. Just make sure they disable auto updates.

MSE let me down on Win 7 x64 - I downloaded a confirmed virus infected file from usenet and MSE failed to pick it up. After that it got booted off my machine pretty quick and AVG free back on.
