How do I restore my 3GS without updating it?

I've got the dreaded ITunes symbol on my 3GS and was wondering how can I carry out a restore without doing an upgrade?

I'm on firmware 3.1.2 and dont want to lose my jailbreak.

if it's stuck in restore mode then you can just reboot it (hold power+home)

I'm still getting the restore screen after doing a reboot.

then something is broken and you need to do a restore.

Unless it's a recent 3GS in which case it needs to be re-jailbroken to boot

It's a brand new 3GS from Orange which I got on Wednesday.

If I carry out a restore from ITunes, will I be restoring using 3.1.2 firmware or is a newer one out which i'll be forced to upgrade to?

3.1.2 is the latest version so just restore and re-jailbreak it.

Your brand new phone from orange will have been 3.1.2 anyway so you're losing nothing restoring from iTunes

sorry to hijack lads..my mate just got a new iphone, his sw is 3.1 should i update the fw via itunes to 3.1.2 and then jailbreak? i'm daft with this sort of thing. many thanks

No harm updating to 3.1.2 unless he's trying to keep the baseband at 04.xx but no real reason to do that now really

Only pre-requisite is that he wants to use his '3' sim card in it...i shall give it a go later on today when I get home from work....

so to summarise:

update normally to 3.1.2 via apple itunes officially then jailbreak?

Tam, yes get your friend to update/restore via Itunes then run Blackrain/Blacksnow

Personally I would restore to a modified (pwned) ipsw which is ready jailbroken (links in d/l section) then unlock with blacksn0w

maltloaf, i tried that..but it keeps saying i cant use that ipsw file when i hold shift and hit restore...its weird, its a black 16gb 3gs too..

In that case jailbreak then restore to the custom one

have you got the right ipsw ?

iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw is the fw i got, but when i do shift n restore it comes up with an error message saying i cannot do it...see i told you im thick with all this stuff... lol

That's the wrong one, for a 3gs you need iPhone2,1 and get 3.1.2 not 3.1

This is getting really annoying now.

I carried out a restore then jailbroke my phone again.

But whenever I turn my phone off then on I always get the stupid restore screen.

Going to try the custom firmware.

You're not going to fix that mate. Your bootrom is the newer one and cannot be fully jailbroken at the moment. Everytime you reboot you need to rejailbreak (known as tethered)
