Fifa to investigate Thierry Henry handball

Commentary of the moment Henry broke Irish hearts

France striker Thierry Henry is to be investigated by Fifa's disciplinary committee over his handball against the Republic of Ireland last month. The Republic failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, losing 2-1 on aggregate to an extra-time goal, courtesy of the assist by Barcelona's Henry.
Fifa's executive committee met on Wednesday to consider the incident as part of a disciplinary crackdown.
But Fifa has not said what punishment Henry could get if found guilty.
Henry twice handled the ball before crossing to William Gallas, who scored the equaliser against the Republic in the play-off in November to put France into next year's finals.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter told a news conference that he did not know what the outcome of the investigation into the handball would be, but it is conceivable that the forward could miss the start of next summer's World Cup finals.
"The disciplinary will open a case on the behaviour of the player Thierry Henry," Blatter told a news conference.
Asked why FIFA were making a special case of Henry, Blatter replied: "This is a matter of the disciplinary committee and it's not a question of this player or another - it was a blatant unfair playing and was shown all around the world, but I don't know what the outcome will be."
On the back of the furore surrounding the incident, Fifa met at Cape Town to consider goal-line technology and extra referees for the finals in South Africa.
However, the sport's governing body decided against using additional referees at the World Cup and have instead opted to set up an inquiry into the benefits of video technology and extra officials.
Fifa were also asked to consider the Republic's request for an extra place in the finals, but the plea was rejected on Tuesday.

Totally ridiculous. He did something that happens almost weekly at various levels of the game. he did it and got away with it this time, in future he will find the benefit of the doubt goes against him. Harsh for the Irish, but lets face it, a fucking tea bag stays in a cup longer than them so all this has done is get them some sympathetic publicity.
    Apathy? can't be arsed.

If anything comes of it he should be given a yellow card. If they are using video evidence to go back and look at an incident surely they can only give him the punishment he would have received had it been seen by the ref at the time. What's the odds that if they do punish him it wont just be a yellow card though?

Bit like the current English rugby team

Well m8 its like this as an Irish man I can accept losing that's ok but its the fashion in which we went out that leaves a bad taste in my mouth... as for the investigation into Thierry Henry I think its too little too late..so don't really see the benefit from this bar the potential to help discourage cheating in the sport...and god knows something needs to be done about it...

I'm happy with the way Ireland have handled the situation so far.. through all the right channels...

I'll bring you back a few years to an Ireland V England game in Lansdowne.. England went 1-0 down.. and your fans wrecked the place....but at least we can walk away from it knowing we didn't embarrass the nation.

FIFA and Sepp Blatter have become an embarrassment, i have no confidence in them at all, and Michel Platini is another twat.
