Tech Blogging kids are more literate

A survey conducted by the National Literacy Trust claims that children should be encouraged to blog and use sites like Facebook to help improve their literacy.

Of the 3000 school children involved in the research, 56% had a social networking profile of some sort, and 24% maintained their own blog.

These kids rated their own writing abilities higher than those who didn’t engage in these activities. 61% of bloggers claimed to be proficient at writing, and 56% of social network site users, whereas those who used neither stood at a notably lower figure of 47%.

Those who actively wrote online were found to be more likely to engage in creative writing such as stories, poems and so forth.

This seems a fair point, although parents would be wise to keep an eye on their child’s online activities, especially where social networking sites are concerned.
