Default Recommendations for hard drive encryption.

    Hi guys,

I've been looking around for encryption progs and wondered if anybody has any recommendations for both mac and / or pc. (Looked at True Crypt (open source) and Pgp - but a bit pricey.)

I'm looking to encrypt the hard drives, so if they get nicked the hard drive is not readable even if removed from the lappy. I'm after a basic, on-the-fly prog that a basic user can get by with.

    thanks

To be honest if you want to use both mac osx and windows on the same encrypted drives then you will probably want to go with True Crypt. Now I know for a fact that there are easy hardware solutions for this where they interface between your drive and the motherboard I just can't find the link. FreeOTFE also looks like a good one since this works on windows and linux.

Haven't got a clue about the mac side but most modern pc laptops I've looked at have a trusted platform module (tpm) which can be used to verify the hd is in the correct machine, your laptop oem should provide a utility to use this to allow you to set up a secure area on the hd.

    Thanks guys.

@ orangejuicy, sorry, i meant the drives are only running one OS, just two different laptop / macbooks.

Safeboot is used by a major bank I cannot name on open forum...

I thought that if a HDD was password protected, like IBM thinkpads, it was useless in another machine? Don't X360s do the same thing?

i was under the impression that thelatest truecrypt was Win7 compatible
Perhaps its the beta that is problematic?

Last one I tried to open ended up getting thrown across a room, so they better not be hacked!
