OKay I've got a dummy DVD reader, I installed the X****** chip, all is working fine with DVD-RW and CD-RW (except a bit slow on loading with CD-RW).
I tried a DVD-R (same brand as the DVD-RW) it works fine, except in the game it locks on loading a sequence... I burn the same iso on the the same burner using a DVD-RW and it works fine...

I tried the DVD-R with the game on it on another Xbox it works fine, no lock....

I also, tried cheap brand DVD-R, my Xbox doesnt want to load it, on the other Xbox it works fine...

So I am the UN-happy user of a bad DVD Rom Xbox... I will tweak the Laser tomorrow coze I don"t have here the tool to measure the ohms....

    I keep You informed....

As I mentioned before, it's DVD Rom depending !!
One brand is able to work on one xbox, and not on another Xbox !!!

If you don't have bought your Xbox yet, don't especially buy special brand of CD-R, they meaby wont work on yours....

Any chances to get even the cheap CD-Rs working ? I really don't want to reburn my 200+ anime-CDs just for watching them using a XBox-DivX-player...

Hey can someone tell me a cd-r media that does NOT work in a XBox with a fussy DVD-Rom. I just bought a new XBox at target and would like to test it out and see if I need to start up the 'ol terrets if you know what I mean. I popped in a TDK Taiyo Yuden music cd-r that I burned, and it played it perfectly, recognized it right away. So so far so good, so if someone can tell me a way to tell without cracking open my box thats only been out of the box 2 hours, then that would be great. Otherwise I'll just wait until I get my mod chip.....Neo & Enigmah kick ass. Enigmah is the only real solution!

Burned Audio CD are able to pass perfecty on the Xbox, BUT burned game CD won't !! It happens....

Because, Audio CD are read at 1x game speed more faster !!

Ok guys, I am a n00b to Xbox hacking, I was wondering how the pics are coming along meatloaf! They would be of MUCH help to me since I have never opened an Xbox.

I assume that this tweaking will stop any dirty disk errors in original games, right?

I have one of those freezing Xboxes, I think this tweaking will help me alot.

So, I await eagerly for the pics! Thanks!

not necessarily, for example, the dirty disc error that can happen in Halo (especially online) is down to networking issues alone

    forget about CDr's

it is possible to tweak to make cdr's reliable, but it is a complicated process that needs specialist test equipment.

use cdrw or better still dvd-r or dvd-rw

Hi Maltloaf, I thought the only 'equipment' needed was a multimeter?

My xbox won't load burnout. I have changed the game three times. I really don't want to open my xbox but I am sure my drive is faulty crap. I have no plans on modding my xbox or voiding it's warrenty. I have had my xbox changed once and I have still the same problem with burnout. Is it the european xbox that has probs? I noticed that the burnout playing in toys-are-us did exactly the same as mine. Dirty damed disk message every 5 mins. all my other games work fine.

Ok, well after spending a good number of hours messing with two different dvd-rom units, I have come to the conclusion that the pot on the dvd-rom drive only affects CDR playback..... I can't make it have any effect whatsoever on dvd-r playback.....

I cannot break playback of my 3rd Gen dvd-r's and I cannot get it to play Datasafe Blue or Bulkpaq's...... (that do work on other xbox's...)

    So, any other suggestions????

P.S. As a result of this testing, I turned my console pot down to a low figure and the media looks fine, and it reads quite a few more cdr's.... which will come in handy when divx/ vcd/ svcd etc players are released.....
    Best Regards,

    Stargate.

i dont agree at all... reading of my datasafe dvd-rw, mirror dvd-r and bulkpaq dvd-r improved very noticably.

Before my tweak, datasafe dvd-rw would very occasionally give the dirty disc message and now they do not at all... Bulkpaqs were very hit and miss and are now 100% Also signal quality at the emitter itself looks less clipped for all discs.

some cdr now read properly as do all cd-rw.

the pot is a direct GAIN adjustment. of the front end laser (from what I can tell) and is not adjusting focus or bias.

By turning down the pot, you are just turning up the power

for more info, look for my soon-to-be-available scope tutorial.. (wednesday hopefully)

Well, as I said, I spent a number of hours and did use a multi-meter to check measurements, and there is the slightest little affect on bulkpaq media (i.e. One of the five I had started to boot then failed, but that was it..).

Other than that, I noticed no difference at all, except for a complete movement on booting cdr's.... from nothing, to more than half....

Now, I know when the ps2 cd laser pot is adjusted, it does appear have a balancing effect on the dvd circiut.... but as you obviously know, there is only a single adjustment on this unit, so I guess there is a single laser instead of two in a ps2???

Not sure, never been really into finding out how the whole thing works, other than in relation to modchips....

So, I know you will know a lot more than me, so I will quite happily take your word for it Maltloaf, but in my experience the effect is non-existant on 'bad-laser' drives in the first place.

Along the same lines, as a PS2 laser cannot be made from the crap it is, to read any dvd-r perfectly..... (or at least I have never heard of it)....

I think the laser has a quality level of its own, within that you can tweak it, but you can't make it physically better.

I think it will be time to look at changing my drive.....
    Best Regards,

    Stargate.
