    perl
    python
    ruby
    pascal
    fortran
    haskell

along with a load of shell scripting (to name a few) are all free and in greater use than the above - makes them better to learn in my mind.

Its always good to start with a bit of basic though, I started with QBasic in dos making some awfully trivial programs but it helped me get an understanding.

Your right though blacksheep, why learn something if you can't use it else where. Then again it depends what your programming for. My advice for a starting point is Java but then I would say that (being a java developer) if your an advanced programmer than try haskell.

Personally if i was looking to learn how to code (i've been coding professionally for the last 15 years), you can do worse than have a play with the free version of MS vb.net/C#
