    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Antivirus_(malware)

its not a virus, and it's quite simple to remove really [unless you only have access to a usb keyboard and legacy usb is turned off in your bios]

if you follow totally randoms suggestion up into the point where you get access to folder on C: [or any other method of accessing the filesystem] but then go in to program files, find the folder for the fake anti virus and delete it, then boot normally and do spyware scan immediately

glad to hear it, remember to scan with malwarebytes regulary (weekly to monthly depending on internet usage, or immediately after a teenager has used the computer ) to avoid this happening in the future - malwarebytes doesn't automattically update either so now and then go into update tab and hit update too

    Hello Chaps,

Just thought I'd let you know that I have been battling with exactly the same problem on my laptop last night and today. DF Saves the day again !!

I was slightly luckier 'cos on my lappy I can hit 'Fn' + 'F4' to get a browser up - was tricky though, no safe mode, no task manager, no icons, no start menu - just a black screen and a cursor.

    Thanks again guys.

    Update

I read somewhere - maybe an earlier post, that it comes back.

    Well it did !!

    This time with a vengeance.

There was no recourse that I could think of but wipe my drive and reinstall windows. I now have a nice clean lappy running W7 but for how long is anyones guess.

any spyware/malware or indeed viri can reinfect your machine at any time - *nothing* can guarentee you wont have such issues. It's a continuously changing battle and if you don't maintain your system it is only a matter of time before you lose the battle again.

Maybe you should consider setting up a limited user account on your computer, if you spend most of your web browsing time under a limited account it may stop much things from making serious changes to your config.

There's also sandboxie, which might help you.. running your web browser in a sandbox..

And windows steadystate.. which prevents ANY changes to any of your software.. (not sure about win7 compatibility)

These are all things I have tried in the past and look promising, can't really say I've needed to do any of that long-term though as i only really visit a few sites regulary and they are quite safe. On the rare occasion I do something which I know puts me on 'questionable sites' I use a virtual pc.
