Anti-Virus For Snow Leopard

Hello Everyone,

Just bought my wife a MacBook Pro 15.4" for Christmas...it's great! However, I'm in the process of trying to find out if anyone can recommend whether I need to use an anti-virus package?

From what I understand, the Mac is fairly impenetrable out-of-the-box...with a decent firewall built-in etc but you can't guard against downloading something nasty.

I've heard that both Norton and Intego VirusBarrier X5 are pretty decent.

i looked into this a while ago and after much research decided not to install anything, i must admit though it did feel wrong at the time.

You won't need anything for osx. My Macbook has been running un-protected for 5 years and nothings ever fucked it. (That includes my brother and he install's every fucking tool bar and every bit of shitty spyware you can find. Ignorant fuck, then asks me to fix it. He can't do shit on osx though)

You'll be fine. No spyware or virus scan needed. Welcome to the world of OSX.

Hasnt apple themselves even suggested that antivirus be used now? With macs ever growing popularity more and more viruses will be written for it.

Thanks for the replies everyone...you're right that it does seem a bit wrong to not have one installed, but it's worth guaging popular opinion.

Considering osx is built from unix, I still an anti-virus/spyware still won't be needed for a while.

never even installed a virus prog on windows personally. If you're sensible you're ok

but on osx I wouldnt even worry about it.

I use Clamxav it's free but no amount of recurring visits to porn sites seems to bother a mac.
