Default Old dish mountings for freesat advice *noob alert*

I had sky fitted to me mums old house years ago and when some cowboy window fitters came to fit double glazing a few years later they did something that made it stop working. I was bored of sky at the time so just cancelled it and forgot about it. The dish is still on the house, I don't know if the LNB was damaged or the dish was knocked out of alignment or what. Just the received said "no signal" or something similar. The box itself was ok cos it went on ebay without a hitch.

With the upcoming digital switch its going to cost us about 120 quid to have a digi aerial fitted so I thought about goin freesatHD using the old dish, or fitting a new one to the old mountings, am I likely to face any issues?

I presume you need a dual/quad LNB to send a separate signal to 2 boxes too? If so, id need a new dish anyway wouldn't I?

Best bet is to change the dish as its too old.

Find a satellite installer and do it on the cheap.

well ive seen dishes in argos for £30, would i just be able to stick that on the mounting and set it up, how hard is the alignment? I dont mind drilling holes in walls and stuff, i just dont fancy spending too much time on top of a ladder

Find a Sky installer and flash him £30.00.

He'll most probs install a new dish and alighn it for that.

Why is the dish too old? It should be totally suitable unless its damaged or rusted to buggery!!

Its probably just been knocked out of allignment......I can lend u a basic meter if you want to realign it m8.

The only issue would be if you could get a quad LNB to fit the dish.

Have a look here for dish/ lnb kits for £40.

Put up some pics and we can advise!

as usual the DF crew dont disappoint

I'm not in any great rush to be honest, just weighing up the options. I can live without telly myself but if me mum needs to get digi'd up id rather we spent a few more quid and went freesat i think.

Where are you 909? I got a brand new zone 2 dish (the larger sky dish) and mounting brackets you can have if you can pick them up, I can't be arsed to package it up and send it as it's too big and heavy. If you're anywhere near Buckinghamshire it's your's.

if your connecting up a freesat box,why not just roughly point in the same as others around you, then look up signal strength and quality in your settings of your box, i did that, just a bit of trial and error, assuming you dont want to pay anyone!!!
    just a thought!

Depends if you can see your tele from where your dish is!

the beamwidth of the astra 2 satellites is that wide that pointing it in the same direction as the local ones will most likely get you a signal. Then it's just a matter of fine tuning for maximum signal quality.

would that mean that a minor knock off alignment wouldn't have been the cause of my sky signal dying before? If not I'd assume the window fitting chimps did damage to the LNB
