Cars New Golf GTi voted Car of the Year

The all-new VW Golf GTi has been named Car of the Year by Top Gear Magazine experts.

And it was a double celebration for Volkswagen after the car was also crowned Hot Hatch of the year.

The remodelled Corolla Verso won the Family Car award, while the new prize of Best Executive Saloon went to the British-built diesel Jaguar S-Type D.

The prestigious annual awards aim to commend both engineering excellence and smart, sexy designs, said a Top Gear Magazine spokesman.

He added: "The double award-winning VW Golf GTi has been rated as the first true replacement for the original Golf GTi built 25 years ago.

"Winner of Car of the Year and Hot Hatch, the GTi was rewarded for having great handling, being fast, socially acceptable anywhere, comfortable and extremely well-made."

The full breakdown of the 12 award categories will be detailed in the January edition of the magazine, which goes on sale on December 3.

This will be followed by a prize presentation to be screened in Top Gear on BBC 2 on December 12.

Other winners included the distinctive Citroen C4, which won Best Hatch, Vauxhall Monaro VXR, which claimed the Best Muscle Car, Ferrari F430, which was chosen as the Supercar, and the BMW M5, which scooped the best Supersaloon.

City car the Peugeot 1007 won the Best Small Car, squeezing out former champion the Smart car.

New GTi was on Top Gear last night - according to big Jezza - it's the hounds rounds, and has indeed captured the rawness of the mk1.

Newbie Re: New Golf GTi voted Car of the Year

I dont think they'll ever match the mk1 & mk2 Golf for sheer fun and excitment. But if i get the chance i would like to test drive the new one when it becomes available.

I had 2 mk2 Golfs and they were thrashed from the time i got in them 'til the time i got out. They always put a smile on your face and always returned 35 mpg. GREAT CAR!!!!!!:thumbs

I've just got back from Germany last night after going to a test day for the new GTI ..

It is quite fantastic to drive, never driven the mk1-2 but it's definately a much much better improvement over the mk3-4.

I'm hoping on the looks department it's like the new BMW'S you hate them at first then slowly get used to them. I much prefer the MK4 looks to be honest.

looks good but at £20K I think it too much for a golf gti. I'd rather have a clio cup or civic type r and the change left over.

I'd prefer a Civic type R at £16,000 on the road its cheaper and faster than the gti, although that new sequential gear change with the dual clutches does look pretty impressive. :whistle

Unfortunately the Type R will always be a Honda, thus looking cheap and nasty.

I am not keen on the looks at all, it is very similare to alot of cars (or so it seems to me) in that kind of range.

However I am not in the market to be buying a new VW Golf, if i were i would give it a go but prob look at getting a decent restore job.

    Cheers.....Q

I have a MK4 GTi and although it got ripped on top gear. I dont think that there is anything wrong with it. I personaly think its a really nice car to drive and prefer the shape to mk5.

Doesent anyone else think that all cars are getting fat and taller starting to look like small people carriers like the 307, civic, new golf, new astra. Cars are starting to lose a lot of style in my eyes.
