Default FFVII - Does any other RPG come close?

OK I dont really play many games as it is but mainly becuase I either can't afford them or I don't want to put the time in only to be dissapointed, and often time can be valuable so it's worth making it count

I loved playing Final Fantsay 7 on the PS1 so it was only right that I played it all the way through and did the most I could on the first go. then after uni while I was on a unofficial stokie gap year I decided to play again and literally do everything. It's all good but now I want to play again but I dont think there's enough to it to keep my captivated for the time that needs to go into it.

What I'm wondering is, there must be other games which are as class as this, or maybe not, perhaps it's in a league of it's own?

I'm looking for something PC based and something along the same lines, so please if you have any recommendations let me know.

If I dont get any I might just have to breed chocobo's all over again for NOTR only to go smash the fuck out of Ruby Weapon

(Plus my housemate is just playing it so I hear the music all the time and it makes me wanna have something to pick up and play when I feel the need)

    TIA
    I'm new to this

    no swearing sanj

nothing really ever beats FF7, but i think thats mainly becasue its alot of peoples first taste of an RPG and its so good. Theres alot of great ones to consider, FF6 (3) was amazing for me, so was chrono trigger and secret of mana. u can get FF6 and Chrono on the PS1 or play the snes roms on emu/xbox. Xenogears (PS1) was also fantastic and very overlooked.
If you have a PS2, dragonquest is a good one to try

My favourites for the PC are fallout and fallout 2, but they're not really the same as FF7.

FF7 was certainly the first rpg I came across and it absolutely blew me away. Afterwards I tried lots of different rpgs and I can't stand them anymore - FF7 was so good that it's ruined rpg gaming for me forever!

secret of manor I've done that one too as well as all Zelda's (minus Four Swords which looks poo). The snes zelda is very close to FFVII, if not in front of, in my list of 'all time amazing dont miss out on this' games list.

I like games like FFVII and Zelda !

thanks for your suggestions and confirmations

Shining force on the Megadrive (I and II) are classics. And with the joys of emulators, can be played on the PC!

    Failing that, Elite was good...

I am waiting for LOTR online.

try ff8 and 9 . never finished 9 but thought 8 was superb , doesn't hold a candle to 7 though . 10 was pish, never even had any inclination to try the second part of it

FF7 was indeed an amazing game, there have been 3 games i'd put in the same class as it in terms of RPG enjoyment and 2 i'd say better it

Firstly, Golden Sun (1 + 2) on the GBA, not a thing I didnt like about these games, very FF7-esque in terms of gameplay, great battles in 3D, then top-down RPG action the rest of the time, really was a joy to play through them both.

Now comes the first RPG imho which is better than FF7, not in the same style as FF7 granted, but the only one which i'm still playing almost on a daily basis 18 months later.. Everquest II, yeah there are people who love WoW, yeah EQ2 may not be n00b friendly, but it's a damn fine, solid RPG.

And now what is still my fave game ever on any platform, and without a doubt the best RPG i've ever played.. Zelda : The Wind Waker. I played through it about 3 or 4 times, it was a delight each time. A lot of people didnt like the departure from regular 3D on the N64 to teh cell-shaded graphics, but personally, I loved it. The game was brilliant, always kept you on your toes, some mad puzzles (and some equally annoying ones that you had to replay through the game to repeat if you missed em) but overall, i'm yet to play a finer game.

So if you've not played any of hte above, I can heartily recommend them to any RPG fan.

    thanks _Belial

I too loved WW on the GC, I'm ashamed to say i've not completed it but I am very close to the end, although I do need to finish it off...same as mario sunshine but I sorta got bored of that concept game, which is what I think it comes across as a bit.

I'll give Zelda on the GBA a bash, I hadn't even thought there was one so that sounds like a plan, especially as my housemate has a GBA...or maybe i'll save it for when I get my DS...!

gonna look into all games suggested. I'm just bored of GTA and I wanna have a nice solid game I can really get into and enjoy.

FFVII is THE greatest game ever - fact

i absolutely loved this when it came out. I put in so many hours on it when i got it

other than this, i've got to agree with gunner - we spent many hours on shining force as well

and if you fancy a trip down memory lane, check out the film FF - Advent Children. Worth a watch if you're a fan

    pah this thread is disgusting!

I enjoyed Final Fantasy and it is "one of the best" But not the best.

Xenogears (also made by square) for me was a far superior story line than 7. If you never played this game (many people haven't) it's worth getting even now.

    Secret Of mana
    Crono trigger
    Final Fantasy 3
Wild Arms (for the intro alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
    Zelda (snes/n64 versions)

    + many many more...

Man I wasted away my gcse's and failed my A'levels on these games.

Oh and Final Fantasy Advent Children (the film) is a fucking joke, does no justice to the game!

I bought a copy of phantasy star 2 recently for the megadrive although I've not had time to get into it yet, but from what I can remember it's pretty good.

There was that one from the ps1 too, final fantasy...can't remember which one though,,,the one where sephiroth was the baddy.

If you liked Secret of Mana, then get Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2). It's easy enough to find the english translation rom and is a wonderful game.

I'm almost near completing it on the PSP and have enjoyed it throughly.

What were all your hours put in to acheive.

I've not played any of those games you've mentioned - may have to grab an emulator and start getting hold of some

as for the film, it does nothing for the story of FFVII, but it was nice to see all the characters again
