As I mentioned I'm not sure exactly what fixed it.
When you get your multi boot grub menu up, stop the countdown, press e to edit the boot command on the option for your xbmc install then highlight the kernel line and edit it. Scroll along and you should see ,nodiskmount, just remove it and press boot, and see if your ntfs drive appears in the list of sources.
editing it in this way does it for the current boot only so is good for testing. To make it stick you need to edit your grub menu
If that doesnt do it let me know and i'll post the other thing I did...

Cheers, to get to terminal I had been closing XBMC in the power off section, then logging in and it brought me to the same place in terminal as you describe. I had ran the command to install github (sudo apt-get install git-core) but it then said it could not find some files, I assumed this was because I havn't connected the XBMC installation to my WLAN (no idea how to do this).
XBMCfreak is based on XBMC live but I think has stuff like SSH installed already to make it easier to setup. I don't know how to connect it to my WLAN or get the IP of XBMC to enter into my putty/WinSCP on my laptop to transfer some files.
Once I get the thing online I think most of the commands I am reading on other forums will start to work.
Ifconfig will tell you the ip mac etc one you are connected. Not looked at wifi yet as I have an Ethernet cable where the revo is
that new release from xbmcfreak (the generic one) doesn't install for me so I'm probably going to go back to v13

you should also be able to see your network info from within xbmc mate, it depends on the skin where it is, if using the default confluence skin its in settings/network info (i think), if not its there in one of the menus.
also yes if your not connected to the web it won't find any info as its all pulled off the net.

I've not checked recently but I read that wifi doesn't work on XBMClive on the Revo and you need to change the network card if you wanted too. It might be different on the new R3600's or with newer builds.
I can confirm wireless does not work with xbmc live. Ethernet only.
right, here's where I am at the moment.
Running Ubuntu 9.10 minimal install..
XBMC Community Forum - View Single Post - [LINUX] My Asrock 330 ION Tweaks, Tips, Tricks, and Fixes!
then installed XBMC via the 'complete and easy script for ION systems'
Complete & Easy XBMC Install script for ION Based Systems - XBMC Community Forum
Edited GRUB to allow ntfs auto mounting (my NTFS drive appears now as /media/sda2)
Installed Samba and added sections for my xbmc drive and the win7 drive (both on the internal)
http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/xbmc-ion/module/7
At the moment, I can read and play media from both partitions on the internal drive
Play media from the network, usb DVD or USB hdd
Put files onto the XBMC partition from the network (smb share)
What I CANNOT do..
although I can see the share and the files, and read from them, I cannot copy any files to the NTFS mounted share. I can write to the partition from the xbmc command line (so I do have rw access) but cannot write from the LAN (smb share)
If anyone needs any info/help or can help with my ntfs share via xbmc problem, then please fire away !

1. I stopped the countdown
2. Pressed 'e' on the top line
3. 4 lines of text now, top one starts uuid, 2nd one starts kernel, 3rd one initrd, 4th one quiet
4. Click 'e' on kernel. It says <kmount,setvolume loglevel=0
5. Deleted kmount, pressed enter, then 'b' to boot
6. The NTFS drive appears in the sources as SDA2
How do I edit the grub menu so that it stays like this permanently? I also would like to reduce the countdown time on bootup.

To edit the Grub options I typed this from Terminal:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Source
That should contain the info you have altered so alter it in the editor that appears then save and it should be permanent
As for me and my struggle I can't see it getting much easier, I wasn't aware the WLAN doesn't work and I have no permanent access to ethernet Would installing Mint, then installing the Linux XBMC make anything easier for me? Or would a GUI OS not help?
How do I get into Terminal? Excuse the noobness, I haven't any idea about Linux
Is it ctrl + alt + f1?

I dont get many excuses to do this on this forum... BUT -

Oh the irony! PMSL!
Not bad for someone that avoids Linux at all costs too!
I did ctrl + alt + f1, entered my login and password.
It then says xbmc@xbmclive:~$ I then type sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst and hit enter. It then says sudo: gedit: command not found.
Aaarrrggghhhh!

Thats it, welcome to Terminal!
Command Line for Linux.
Strange, it should open in a text editor when you run it:
How to Edit the GRUB boot loader configuration file
Boot your Linux, and open a Terminal window
(Terminal is usually in Applications/Accessories).
Backup Menu.lst (see above).
Type in, and press [Enter]
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Menu.lst will open in your text editor.
Make the required alterations to Menu.lst and check your changes twice!
Save the Menu.lst file and reboot.
Is your xbmc installed in Windows or is it the Live version? I'm using thr xbmc live freak recommended by pheonixsingh

I am using XBMCfreak Live as well mate :s
use pico not gedit the rest should be the same.
sudo pico /boot/grub/menu.lst
make the changes (change the titles as well if you like, to xbmc, xbmc (safe mode) and Windows7)
to save, do ctrl+x then y then return then do
sudo reboot
If you're using 9.10 like me, the grub config is elsewhere they moved it
glad it worked for you although you should have removed "diskmount" not just "kmount" the rest just was off the edge of the page...
