IMO if you expect him to stay on for A levels etc. Then a ultra portable would make sense. Not a netbook, one of the hybrids. Only downside is no internal disc drive but they still have 11-13'' display, all the other bells and whistles, very light and pretty powerful. I had a Toshiba T130 but they have released new models now. Not sure what other manufacturers have to offer.

Out of the three you mentioned the HP sounds best value. Out of warranty Sony charge an absolute fortune for repairs. I would feel more comfortable purchasing a Toshiba, Asus, Lenovo, or IBM though.

You really could go much cheaper if it's just for homework and media sharing. Spend some of the money you save on an external HDD.

Nothing to do with more people buying Sony or HP, Sony are dire when it comes to build and reliability everyone I know who has bought Sony vaio products have had problems with them.

Lenovo or Toshiba are the way to go but you pay a premium for them. I have a customer with a drawer in her filing cabinet with 4 dead Sony laptops in there, all with less than 18 months or less use on them, and all deemed to expensive to repair by the extended warranties that she had bought with them. They just return them and send her a cheque to go out and buy another.

never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!

The hybrids have a full sized keyboard mate don't get a netbook as they almost all have small keyboards with the exception of the NB200 (and probably a few more). Look into the Toshiba T130 second hand or the T230 new.
