Default Getting tax without a insurance cert?

As per my last thread I managed to get a Focus TDCI 06 plate 2 litre Ghia. I have the V5, MOT certificate and I am fully insured on it (immediate cover), however the documents of insurance won't arrive for a couple of days at least and I need to get back on the road ASAP.

If I call the insurance company and have a confirmation letter emailed will the Post Office accept this when I print it off?

    Cheers

they accept a fax, I had to do that at the post office, you could also print a cover note as most companies will email you a .pdf file of it....

i normally ask for certificate of insurance to be emailed for that very reason

ive had the post office query a posted certificate once but they also refused to engage in any process of verification if i called the insurance company!

so ive never had an emailed insurance certificate refused for road tax purposes.

Why not do it online or over the phone direct with the DVLA, they can check your insured in a database. I have never got a tax disc for my cars from the post office.

Same here, if its insured within the last 5mins you can tax it online as the database is updated every minute.

I personally do it online now as written out disks fade and i prefer to keep them for when selling a car, Online are printed and sent, you can use your old tax disk for 5 working days without being pulled for failing to display while the tax disk is in the post.

I had trouble getting my old car taxed last year through the PO. They wouldn't accept a print off from Swift Cover (all the certificates etc were online based and you had to print them off). Took it to 2 places and they wouldn't accept, eventually the 3rd PO did.

The problem is you can't apply online until the logbook is in your name and I only bought the car today. But from my research you can apply for tax and change the name on the V5 at the same time if you go to the PO with a MOT, and insurance cert with the V5 filled out with my details.

If I can do it online with the docs I have now I will do that tonight! But can I if the V5 has not been submitted yet? Or can I do it online tonight if the logbook is posted tomorrow?

When I went to tax my new car 2 weeks ago online it said that it will be sent to the previous address and gave a warning so don't think you can mate. I took my V5C/2 form to the PO in the end together with my insurance and MOT docs.

Up this way all post offices are complete CNUTS wont even take a faxed copy as no company watermark or company details printed through unlike the original

Not like the good old days

Well I found out the hard way this morning. After hearing people say they took it to different PO's until they accepted it I went to a PO about 5 miles away, they said they can't do it but the DVLA office will. I then drove another few miles to the next PO (on the way to DVLA office), same thing happened. Drove 20 more miles to the DVLA and queued, they said they won't accept a faxed cover note either! Drove 25 miles home and though I would give it one last shot, 2 more PO's and still no joy.

So I have wasted a whole morning and still can't drive the car I don't see what the issue is, surely if I was driving uninsured I wouldn't bother buying tax! IMO this just encourages driving without tax, I have jumped through all the hoops for the DVLA, made sure I was insured immediately so I could get the car home, got the MOT, got the insurance to fax a cover note through...

If you have a mate with a trader's policy he should be able to get one at a post office without any hassle.

Anyone can check the status of motor insurance on a vehicle on www.askmid.com.

When we sold my sisters car it was partially due to the tax expiring as it was just before 3 and a half years old so the tax expired at the end of the month and my sister wanted a new car, to save any hassle we bought the new disc for the new owner and she gave us the cash for it.

It was strange I went round to the girl house the other night who bought it and it was still sat there on the drive and looked in pretty good condition.

I bought it as an ex-fleet car so got a great price with full service history at the ford dealership. But as such it is registered to a company so I can't call them and ask them to forward me the tax disc if I registered it online with the current V5 tonight Guess I will have to wait for the documents to come through the post, I'm going to be pissed off if the cover note is just printed with all the same details as this faxed copy and no reason why it specifically had to be the posted copy.
